New point system!
January 16, 2009 at 5:35 pm #2466
Just wanted to let people know that I’ve added a point system to track various things. Right now you earn points from doing the following:
1 point = posting a comment anywhere on the site
2 points = posting an original forum topic
The points are subject to change depending on how people use them, but I figure this is a great way to let new users on BBM know who the more veteran posters are. Unfortunately everyone is starting from scratch with 0 points. I will be dolling out points to users who I’ve seen on BBM regularly and who I know give great advice. Probably not hundreds of points or anything like that, just a few to get you started and as a ‘thank you’ for posting helpful things.
Right now the only way to see points is by either posting a comment (a yellow box will appear at the top of the screen telling you that you just got some points), or by clicking on your profile. That will soon be changing so that the points are way easier to see at a glance (probably under most peoples profile pictures).
Let me know what you guys think of this, and if you have any more ideas. Thanks!
– BBM Admin
Nice, I just got 2 points!January 16, 2009 at 10:21 pm #15726
OOoo thats a good idea elwood. I’ll have to figure out a way to do something like that. Right now only admins can ‘give’ points, but I might be able to figure out a way to do it so the common user can. Maybe a sort of ‘vote up’ system, where you can click a box next to a comment or thread and it will give that user a point or something. I will have to play around with it but that is a very good idea.

hrm… I’ve seen these points/rep systems abused like crazy… not sure it’s needed anyway as people will make judgements on what’s posted… just my $.02…January 16, 2009 at 10:41 pm #15728
Well its still a trial run, it’s easy to get rid of it if people start making BS posts just to get points. Let me know if you start to see some abuse.January 17, 2009 at 12:19 am #15730
I hope your points system doesn’t get abused. From what I’ve noticed the majority of the people that visit are looking for insight to motorcycle riding. I would think that anyone that chooses to abuse it will pretty much stand out like a sore thumb. Good luck, great site. Ride safe and God bless.January 17, 2009 at 1:13 am #15733
Any “rewards” system are always subject to useless abuse just for the fact that it amuses the easily entertained. If you keep it under the control of admins and developer its less likely to happen, though it could become a small aggravation when the OC types start coming out of the wood work.
Personally I like the idea. Might even encourage some of the un-named out from behind the curtains.
Though I definitely appreciate the “props” I am sure there are more here more deserving then me of such compliments.
I hope to see it get implemented and become a “fun” and informative idea.January 17, 2009 at 2:56 am #15737
Well I can see some abuse will happen but overall it’s a great idea. Maybe even give a little highlight on the main page of an original post or topic of the week based on wich ones get the most hits/posts in seven days. Give 3 points for best post and 5 for best forum topic.January 19, 2009 at 7:44 am #15798
The points system sounds like a slight variation on a post count and BBM has always been slightly unique as the only site I know without one. I’ve always kind’a liked that.
I agree with Elwood that knowing the experience of someone would help me decide how much importance to place on their advice. Maybe a simple “Riding Since” date would be helpful? Knowing the miles they have ridden would also be nice but that would require someone constantly updating their profile. If it was broken into a few broad ranges it might work. Say <1k, 5k, 10k, 20k, 30k and > 50k.

maybe there could be like a sidebar, or perhaps a help/advice from senior/experienced members a sorta a “if you’ve got questions, these are the guys in particular to ask” also perhaps if some are willing maybe a…i wouldn’t call it a mentorship or anything, but maybe some of the more experienced guys’ll put their names out and encourage people to PM them with questions and advice.
ultimately it would be up to you (ben) to decide who those experts going into a sidebar or whatever, are. (we trust ya)February 4, 2009 at 1:08 am #16259
So i get the system now. Sorry for my post in the other topic. I thought i looked for a topic like this one but i didnt find it until now.
