My new Joe Rocket Alter Ego pants arrived today. They are very comfy, as I sit at my desk and type. Which is a perfect test of them, because the sitting position at my desk chair is pretty much identical to the riding position on my bike.
If you aren’t familiar with the Alter Ego products, they’re convertible, from mesh to normal textile to water proof. Trust me that water proof is really nice when the weather gets cold, because the water proof liner doesn’t breath at all, and at 60mph and 33 degrees you don’t want a lot of air flow.
The pants are pull-over style, with armor at the knees and some padding at the hips. I have a zipper at the back which will connect to my jacket as well, so that I don’t expose my back for road rash. There’s a big adjustment strap at the waist, which is good. I want it loose for pulling it over my regular pants, but I want it snug for riding.
I’ll have to wait until I can do some actual riding in these pants for a full review, but on my initial impression they’re pretty nice.

I have them sized up so that I wear them as over pants.
I’ve worn them in freezing snow/drizzle, torential downpour, and blazing hot humidity. They’ve worked well enough in all situations.I recommend two things:
1- If you have a joe rocket jacket, ALWAYS do up the back connecting zipper (and if you don’t have a joe rocket jacket, it comes with an extra zipper that any seamstress and add/replace existing zipper with). The day you forget is the day your jacket rides up, pants ride down, and you get some very cold rain washing down your bum…
2- On longer rides wear bicycle shorts (padded lycra ones) under them. I find my comfort point is just shy of two hours in the Alteregos on my ZZR. With padded bike shorts (which are surprisingly uncomfortable to walk in) that moves up to all day, and my limits get set by my knees and lower back, not my butt.
For the bike shorts, they don’t have to be fancy, they just have to fit you right. I got mine for $30 at MEC.I hope your pants treat you as well as mine have treated me.

Fortunately I do have the matching Alter Ego jacket, so it will match up just fine. That was part of the motivation to buy the pants.
