Hi. I’ve been considering the FZ6 as a first bike (but leaning toward less powerful options), and I just came across an announcement about the new 2009 FZ6R. While it’s still a bit high on power for beginners, it looks like they’ve made a lot of changes that make it more do-able as an advanced beginner bike. Here’s the write-up I saw:

I’ve also been considering the Versys (again, probably ambitious for a first bike and more likely a second bike for me), and I’m glad to see more companies working on medium sized bikes with a more upright, sport-touring-ish layout.

    No such thing.

The FZ6R looks like a very good motorcycle, but I’d recommend it as a second bike, not a first bike. Even with its user-friendly powerband and low seat height this is likely a 100+ HP motorcycle, capable of hitting 60 mph in under four seconds, and 100 mph a few breaths later.

Keep leaning toward the less powerful options for your first bike.

The fz6r is basically the same as the European XJ6, which has 78 hp, 5 more than an SV650, yet it has about 20 less ft-lbs torque.

Sorry for the somewhat redundant post. I missed the earlier post about the bike.
