hello all, I’m currently in kenosha WI, but will be moving to Berkley/Bay Area in about a year. I plan to pick up my first motorcycle then (to avoid transporting and cali emissions issues) so I’ve got plenty of time to research various bikes and gear and whatnot. though I’ll also take time to to a bit of testing between then and now (sitting on bikes, trying on helmets, etc…) and to schedule my class, of course.
my plan is to start out on a 250, since it’ll be 99% local riding, and I’ll be totally new to riding. though a friend mocked me with saying “heck even scooters get up to 600cc, might as well ride a moped” and urged me to go at least 2-2.5 my body weight in cc’s which would put me around 4-500ccs, which is hard to find on a cruiser, so to follow his rules, I’d have to get at least a 600cc, and thats way more bike than I care to start off with.
I’m 5’6-5’7(on a good day) and 200ish so a smaller bike will fit well, I think I’d have a fair amount of trouble flatfooting a lot of the bigger bikes.
I’m longing a bit for the virago 250, as it seems to get the most gas mileage (up to 90? wow) and it looks pretty snazzy to boot. though I’m open to other ideas (gotta keep an open mind) but I’ve absolutely no interest in sport bikes, nor dual sports. and the higher up touring bikes just seem like almost cars to me,
I’ve seen a lot of good reccomendations on reading material, and will pick up most if not all of the books mentioned (the complete idiots guide and zen and the art of motorcycle maintinance, however there was another one mentioned that I can’t seem to remember)
so I’ll be floating around here for quite a while before I manage to join the ranks of the rest of you cyclists, but I’ll get there, don’t you doubt it.

If there’s anything more important than my ego
around, I want it caught and shot now…June 29, 2008 at 5:38 am #8042AmorylParticipantjust as a note, I’ve got a long history of becoming interested in a hobby, studying it for months, up to a year or more, before ever actually getting into the actual hobby itself. paintball being a prime example, I’d been a member of several forums for a good year before ever playing my first game (a game I traveled near 900 miles to attend) when I mentioned at said game that it was my first time playing the response was largely “wow thats a long way to drive to play….er….wait a minute! you’v been on the forum for over a year!”
I guess I just like to be sure of something before I commit
