Passed this last weekend here in SF Bay Area! YES!! Loads of fun, but exhausting! Now to get the license and buy a bike!

Some advice for those who haven’t taken the course yet: As soon as you are allowed to shift into second gear, do it, and do it often. Get used to getting out of first gear and up to the max course/drill speed. Before the end of the first day, our instructor was encouraging us to shift into second whenever we were driving around (for instance, getting back in line after completing a drill). Except for the slow speed skill drills, most of the drills _require_ and are designed for higher (2nd gear) speed, and these drills are definitely easier to do with more speed. BTW, we were timed during our final evaluation on all the drills, and our time for the cornering drill was compared against a time (an average?). Good luck all. Have fun!

Congrats! I’m jealous… I love the Bay area, and it seems like a great place to explore on a bike.

The second gear advice is particularly true for the Buell Blasts (for folks in the Rider’s Edge course). The Blast is torquey and all-to-easy to jerk around in first gear. Even on slower exercises, keeping the revs up and feathering the clutch in second provides a much more controlled and predictable ride than staying in first.

The time aspect must vary by state. In MD, the only exam item that was timed was the turn exercise. (Well, technically they also had a stopwatch in the quick stop, but it was just a way to determine your speed so that they could calculate the allowed stopping distance.)

I have a lot of friends who live out in the bay area and they’ve been pressuring me to move out there. But I can’t afford to until I graduate =(
