Tonight while riding near some large parks/fields, there was a lot of moisture in the air and it started building up on my shield/visor. I was wondering what you guys do in a situation like that? ie, flip up the shield/visor? just keep wiping it off w/ gloves? just curious b/c first time its happened to me.
August 12, 2008 at 12:57 pm #10364BuddParticipantThe same thing happens in the fog. You have to lift your shield or constanty wipe it.

If you’ve got fog on the outside (or rain), you can buy small wiper blades that fit over your gloved fore-finger. I have one on my “Winter Gloves” full time. For the rain, you’ll also want to periodically put Rain-X on the outside of your visor.
Rain-X is an absolute *must* for wet weather riding in my opinion (if you want to be able to see that is).
August 12, 2008 at 9:16 pm #10412BoOZe P-ti MotardParticipanti used to put this kind of product with my touch: i took a lil tiny amount of ‘white paste’ (that’s what we call it here) and wiped it on the outside of the visor. Even the paste there, you can see clearly w/o light deflecting. Why i did that? Well why do we call that rain ‘drops’? For it to drop..simple XDD huh huh… yea the droplets would just get blown away by the wind… and i had a full leather glove palm and knuckle + fingers protected by dunno what layer ;P and it had ‘chamois’ on the index and palm.. This ‘cloth’ is well known for its absorbing purposes… I would just pass it on the visor and ‘pouf’, no water.. also on the seats… people were amazed to see that i just ‘passed’ my hands over the seat a few times and again, ‘pouf’ no water.. they were searching for some cloth in my hands ;P well the glove was waterproof, breathable and winter 1, kept my hands warm… well… we were talking about antifog nah? XDDD

also, if you are going 30+ mph, if you look left/right then the fast moving air clears your visor for you… no need to wipe

Yes, that works fine if your visor’s nice and clean and you’re going along at a fair clip (I’d say nearer 50 than 30 for it to work well). Remember to keep your eyes looking ahead though.
That said, what if you’re *not* going fast and you get muddy water spray on your visor from the car in front? That and your visor’s half fogged-up or wet with condensation on the inside.
As someone who commutes by motorcycle all year 4 to 5 days a week, believe me, I’ve been there and done that, and it’s as scary as hell riding a motorcycle in traffic when you can’t see a damned thing, especially if, like me, you wear glasses ’cause even if you flip up your visor to see past the muddy spray, your glasses get wet and you can’t see through them either.
Much better to be prepared by having pre-treated your visor with Rain-X and having a finger wiper at the ready.
August 13, 2008 at 10:06 pm #10467BoOZe P-ti MotardParticipantOh you too wear glasses? But I had difficulties with them, so I switched to lenses. I will be talking with my visor open, ‘coz i rode like this for more than a year ‘coz 1st the visor roller was broken, so every time I would try to open or shut it, the visor would flip off the helmet, so i let it open and 2nd, too many scratches (after all the accidents and falls)… So visor open and riding, I noticed my eyes would not wet much, or dry too much, and at night it was easier for me to ride since cars’ beam would deflect in my spectacles glasses… During the day I used to wear a tinted glass (rayban) with my lenses just to avoid possible insects or dust… During rain even if the water would hit my face, I was not bother..well maybe i was used to it but that was the other fun part of riding…for me… and well a bandanna was always tied round my lower half of my face, covering nose and mouth, just the eyes out..that was my kamikaze style..lol… and btw, the law here states during rain, leave a gap of 10metres between you and the vehicle in front ‘coz if ye stick to its back, of course you’ll get all kind of shitty water on the face…

Solomolo RiderAugust 15, 2008 at 4:37 am #10578LokiParticipantI also wear glasses, its time consuming.
On a side note. Who else has sneezed in there helmets? Yesterday was the first time i did it and i didnt know what to do. I normaly sneeze threw my mouth cause i dont like snot flying everywhere but that sometimes causes alot of spit. But i got that itch in my nose and i was like “crap sneezr through my nose of mouth” I took the latter and sneeze through my nose…. Snot and spit at the bottom of my helmet, im like damn…. I also tried to hold it back but that also sucks.
How many times has this happen to you guys and what did you do?August 15, 2008 at 11:45 am #10584BoOZe P-ti MotardParticipantewwwwww….. hahahahahaha.. dang! why would you hold that?!! I have sneezed several times.. and how the h** can you sneeze by the nose?!!! We cannot do that!!! We all sneeze by the mouth. Its not gud by nose… Well for me just lil saliva but I don’t know if there was the what you said.. Most of the times visor was open so… no prob at all… I have had frequent running nose (watery, not gooish) and well just wiped it with the chamois which forms part of my glove..lol… but my kamikaz attitude (put bandanna round my lower part of face covering nose and mouth) saved me from dirtying my helmet…
dang yea sure glasses are time consuming..remove, put helmet, remove, take out helmet and all the probs…BoOZe
Solomolo RiderAugust 15, 2008 at 1:50 pm #10596BuddParticipantI found that if you feel the need sneeze and you open your visor it will sometimes help.

August 15, 2008 at 6:03 pm #10620JirikiParticipantyup, if you are going to be riding somewhere muddy…. that is definitely a good idea to add some sort of wiper to your gloves… i think there are some that actually come with ’em…
if you tip your head @ 30 and find the right angle, the water streams off… If you are checking your blind spots pretty often, then you never really get any water that accumulates…
if you are getting water spraying on your visor from the tires of the car in front, you are probably too close
August 15, 2008 at 10:10 pm #10647parad0x177ParticipantClean the outside of the shield thoroughly per the manufacturer’s instructions and apply some Rain-X per its instructions. At any kind of speed at all, the water will just bead up and roll-off. Granted you usually can’t use it on mirrored shields, but it’s fine on the outside of clear and tinted shields.
August 19, 2008 at 3:54 pm #10764RupmiscParticipantWhere did you find the small wiper blades?
August 19, 2008 at 4:59 pm #10768megaspazParticipantIt’s been awfully wet lately on my morning commute on 35… You know if rain-x is safe for a mirrored visor? Getting tired of constantly waiting for straights to wipe and turning my head left and right only does so much…
