I stumbled onto this website via an Internet search because I have a Suzuki DRZ-400 SM that I’ve put knobbies on and low gearing for off-road riding and wondered if anyone else had done it. I’ve posted on the DRZ-400 SM bike review my exact set-up.

I’m 53 years old next week and don’t ride fast anymore. I bought the Suzuki because I liked the heavier frame, tall stance, extreme shock travel, big tires, etc. But the street tires didn’t provide enough traction for off-road. With the different sprocket set-up, the gearing went from 2.73 to 4.88. That thing would climb a tree if you could get traction! My top speed is near 35 mph now. It cruises nicely at 27-28 mph.

My first bike was a Honda Super 90 when I was 15 years old. I’ve owned a couple of Harleys since them, but now I only care to ride beaches, off-road parks, and in my neighborhood. My dog wants to go everywhere the bike goes.

I live along the Texas Gulf Coast, enjoy fly fishing in saltwater flats and have a 1977 Jeep CJ-7 for off-roading too.

    Great website, thanks and regards,

Mike Ballard (a little middle age crazy)

Welcome Mike! I really think that the next bike I’m going to add to my stable is giong to be the drz400. It seems like it would be so good going up mount hamilton which is really close. The roads going up are paved, but even when riding a street bike it ‘feels’ like i’m riding a dirtbike when I go up that road!
