Long ride coming up, advice?

Spring break is coming up and I’m going to be going to Lake Havasu for the break. I’ve decided that I’m gonna skip out on the carpool over there and ride there instead.

Google maps shows that this is a 208mi trip, all but the last 20mi will be on the I-40.

As of now, the longest distance I have ridden in a single trip was about 75mi, and that was mostly twisties and small highways (Flagstaff to Sedona and back)

We’ll be stopping at least once (likely in Kingman, AZ)

So, seeing as I haven’t done any long distance riding… any advice??

    Thanks.

200 miles isn’t that long, imo. I’ve done 300 mile rides for the hell of it just riding around the bay area. Things I would bring though:

    small first aid kit.
    tire patch kit.
    small set of tools.
    bottles of water.
snacks. You can wear an open face helmet and snack on bugs. They’re high in protein.
    cigarettes.
    cell phone.
coins for a payphone in case you’re traveling in an area that has no coverage
a real map in case gmaps is wrong.
cash for those places still living in the stone age and haven’t heard of debit/cc cards.

Along with that, try to find out the weather forecast and bring the appropriate gear/covering/clothes.

If you haven’t already gotten one of these, do it.

Sounds like you are planning on riding along with your car pooling buddies. It might be better if you were to leave before them so you could ride at your own pace and stop when you want to. They will be able to maintain a higher speed than you (at least in comfort) and you will need to gas up before them. If you left 30 minutes ahead of them help would never be far behind (in case of break downs) and you would likely arrive at your destination at the same time.

Thanks for that list megaspaz, pretty sure i can cross cigarettes off your list tho lol. probably maps too as its a pretty direct route and im gonna be sticking by my buddies in a car who have been there before.

also, briderdt… whats crampbuster?? if it is what it sounds like, i think a little gatorade will do just fine.

Google crampbuster….simplistically it is a “lever” or “paddle” that attaches to your throttle grip to allow you to rest your wrist on it so you don’t have to keep a constant grip on it.

The crampbuster lets you work your throttle more like a gas pedal instead of a twist grip. Let’s you relax your forearm. Of course, there’s the “cruise control” that takes it one step further, but the CB is something like $10, “installs” in 10 seconds (non-permanent installation), and makes a WORLD of difference.

ah! crampbuster was totally not what i thought it was. seems just like throttle rockers. i dont think i do enough long distance riding to justify that purchase… seems like a great idea though.

I use it all the time. One of the best comfort upgrades I’ve made so far.
