Some onboards and pics from the last novice school of the season. Hit a personal best of 2:13. I know the vid says 2:14, but that’s some youtube/veoh/quicktime cock up. Editing the quicktime vid shows 2:13 and since i either hit 2:16s and 2:15s consistently, that had to be the 2:13 lap since I didn’t hit 2:14 at all.
Chasing instructor Ernie Montague (afm199) around after being passed. I wanted to follow him because he rides an SV as well he’s FAH-AST FAST…

My biggest reason not to do it is that I assume I would need different tires. At least my understanding is that road tires are too hard for the track and track tires are too soft for the road. So do you have to resign yourself to either own two bikes or only do one type of riding (track or road)?

However, for your average trackday, you definitely don’t need special tires. You have a Ninja 650R right? Fairly recent? Your stock tires are probably fine.
It depends on the track day, but most of the time there are a large variety of riders in the novice group. This is not intended as a slight against the ‘spaz at all, but part of the reason that he would pass so many people in earlier videos is that the novice group is really diverse. A lot of those people a) have never been to the track before, b) aren’t very used to the race line, braking, shifting, body positioning, etc., and c) don’t have enough confidence yet to push hard at all. At most track days I’ve been to, there are all kinds of bikes in the novice group: your 650R-type casual sport bikes, nakeds, SVs, even an occasional Harley. For most of these people, there is no need for race-oriented gear.
On your first track day, you will (or rather, SHOULD) be taking it easy. Get used to the feel of the track, learn the course, figure out lines, entry speeds, etc. Considering you’re relatively new to motorcycling and would be new to the track, there’s no reason to even approach the limits of your stock tires. You’d be surprised how fast you can go comfortably.

I got 12 trackdays out of them before switching them out due to paranoia… it had enough meat for another 2 or 3 though. You won’t need the special race tires until you start hitting lower-mid advanced pace times…

The stock Bridgestone Battlax BT-016 rubber was also really solid (same two-compound “hypersport” street tire class); I switched for reasons of price, not performance. If you see a deal on either tire, I’d go for it.

You can click the download buttons and watch them on your own machine, or download their webplayer plugin for IE… yeh it sucks. “Session 3 BP view” is the full vid though since my camera on that session stopped for some reason at about 7+ minutes.
2:13 lap front view – Youtube vid since it’s better vid quality.
