ParticipantI haven’t been in here since May…so seven months…I had just bought my new to me bike and I was loving it…I put on over 8000kms this season (I was aiming for about 12,000kms, but I’ll get to that)…did my first road trip through the mountains with some local riders…
And also did a couple of longer day rides with and without a riding buddy…then we decided to plan a three day tour through the Kootenay Mountains…WOOHOO…so me and two buddys put a plan together including a route and destinations…
We had a great day one, a couple of glitches but a really nice ride…
That first night one of the guys broke his key off in his saddle release…not good, he didn’t bring a spare key…we got the piece out and spent half of day two finding a blank that would work (it was a Sunday…nothing was open in the small town)…finally found a blank that seemed like it might work, but it was a little thick…so we spent a couple more hours sanding the key to get it into the ignition…
We finally got it to work, and were back on the road by 2pm…not a big deal, we only had about 5hrs of riding to do…so we headed toward the ferry across the Kootenay Lake…beautiful twisty bits, tight corners…we were leaning the bikes over and having a blast…
Then it happened…
Now, I’m sure your wondering how an awesome rider like me could possibly have crashed…somebody must have cut me off or swerved into my lane…animal on road…nope…simple rookie rider error…and not just one thing wrong…
I entered the corner on the inside of my turn (error #1), miss judged the entry speed for the corner (error #2), had to lean over far enough to drag the peg which scared the crap outa me and I over corrected (error #3), then I saw the gravel at the outside edge of the turn TARGET FIXATION (error #4)…
Not enough experience and riding beyond my capabilities…having too much fun…
I have to thank Ben and all the others for preaching ATGATT…WEAR YOUR GEAR, IT WORKS…I came through without a scratch…the jacket is fine, the gloves got scuffed, the boot toe got ground off (so they are toast), the helmet didn’t get scuffed but the visor did…so new visor required…might replace the helmet for something quieter…
So the rest of the trip was spent on the back of a 2005 Honda VFR800…not terrible, but it wouldn’t be my first choice if I had to ride pillion again…then I got to have a road trip the next weekend to pick up the wreckage…
And now I have a winter project…the rebuild of the BEAST…bent fork, broken shifter, broken trim ring on exhaust heat shield, scratched headlight lense…other misc scratches…I would say the bike is broken in thoroughly…
I ended up with some sore bits, but nothing broken or serious…all I can say is…well…OOOOPSSS…
Oh yeah, and no collision insurance…I get to pick up the tab for this one…
Later.
