I found a dirt bike school near to where I live, well about an hour away. I figure it could make me a better street rider, so why not? I want to do a two day course, perhaps this week (I heart summer vacation), and they’re asking me wether I want to do dirt bike or trials bike, each with obviously a different agenda. What I want to know from you all out there is, what do you think I’ll get more out of as a new rider?

July 26, 2010 at 10:27 am #27767TrialsRiderParticipantMotocross, enduro, scrambles, flat track, ice racing or just riding fire roads, they are all about going fast, it doesn’t matter if you drag your feet or flail all about, it’s all about blasting. If speed is the thing that does it for you pick one. ( I started out that way )
Now if you want to totally amaze yourself at what a motorcycle ( and you ) can do, traverse the most incredibly rough terrain that you can imagine, develop form, technique and get some total body exercise while riding with great people that are there to help you instead of stoning you to death in the next corner and to boldly ride to where no motorcycle has gone before, Trials rocks. ( wish I had discovered that much earlier ) With 400 remote acres in the Canadian Shield plus another 20 acres of Rural property and living 15 minutes from a new motocross track, I still don’t feel the urge to get back into Motocross. As much fun as it is; go fast dirt biking requires ten times the fuel, space, gear, agitates the neighbors and trashes bikes at an accelerated rate.
Cross training from Trials does work. Last years #1 Canadian Professional Roadracer rides Trials ( when it does not interfere with his track racing schedule )

I want to go to flat track school, but unfortunately, there’s nothing even remotely near me.
July 28, 2010 at 4:28 am #27803Ursula AlusruParticipantI put my back out and have been told that there will be no dirt bike school for me for at least two weeks. That and I’m not allowed to complain about the lack of dirt bikes in my life or the keys to my bike will be hidden too – I gotta say I haven’t been enjoying speed-bumps. So, I’m booking for the end of August. I’m going dirt bike first and trials later in the fall. I’ll keep you posted. Until then it’s off to the heating pad.
July 28, 2010 at 11:11 am #27807TrialsRiderParticipantI find Trials easier on the back than street or other dirt bike riding, because you are standing and moving around a lot. When my back hurts, which is often, I take 2 Motrin and go for a ride, seems to help until the next day and then you can do it all again
July 29, 2010 at 12:36 am #27828Ursula AlusruParticipantThats what I’ve been doing – I ride to the chiropractor 60km away then ride around until dinner -sleep and then repeat.
July 29, 2010 at 1:47 am #27830Jeff in KentuckyParticipantMy back is less than perfect- I find that stretching exercises every day and long walks help. Also soaking in a tub with a handful of epsom salt added- we bought a tub with whirlpool jets- not good for the electric bill but it does help my back. I use generic acetaminophen timed release pills once in a while, designed for people with arthritis. I do not use ibuprofen unless the other is not strong enough. If I take them right before going to bed, it is easier to get out of bed the next morning.
July 29, 2010 at 3:05 pm #27841Ursula AlusruParticipantI think they have me doing exactly that in physiotherapy today. I was training for a half marathon until this bump in the road so put it on hold for a while – as a result there has been less stretching. I like the idea of motorcycle man having a hot epsom soak in his whirlpool jets. It’s where two worlds come together!
August 7, 2010 at 12:44 pm #27983TrialsRiderParticipant…I think that’s what I’ll call this one !
Looks flatter in this picture than it really is, it’s one of my favorite sections, I could ride it on almost any dirt bike, but it might not be pretty. On a Trials bike I can zig-zag all the way up, feet up This is part of a Junior, Grand Veteran, Vintage section, ready for our August 22nd. NationalCome and spectate if you can, it’s less than a 3 hour ride from Toronto city hall.
