Hmmm, the zipper on my pants is bust

So does anybody out there wear Fieldsheer gear, and if so, how do they like it? I’ve got a pair of their Four Season overpants (new in June) that are being difficult. The main zipper on my right leg has been having trouble for a week or so (not wanting to close properly) – I’ve been keeping it going by crimping it with pliers, but the other day it finally went for good. I’m still wearing the pants – they’re all I’ve got, and the left leg still gives me full protection (I use safety pins to keep the right leg out of trouble, and reasonably in place). I had previously thought that the zippers looked a bit flimsy to hold up in a slide, and now I have no confidence in them at all. Are Fieldsheer products usually this low-end, or have I just been unlucky? (I’ll call New Enough on monday to see about warranties)

Also, can anybody recommend a pair of good cold-weather/all-weather overpants for a reasonable price? I’m a commuter, so they need to be overpants, but I’m a student, so they can’t be too expensive. I’ll spend the money if it will really count, but if I don’t have to then I can pay rent and food with it.

I have the Tourmaster Flex pants and have been very happy with them. I’ve been using them in all 4 seasons. They cost me around $100 from a bike shop. Not sure what they would go for online.

Of course, I recently bust the zipper at the waist but in my defense the store only had a size small so when I wear them over jeans they are *really* tight. Something I have to consider every time I look at a doughnut :(

I don’t own any Fieldsheer gear but my father owns two of their jackets, one mesh jacket and one waterproof sport jacket, the Aquasport I think it’s called. The mesh jacket is everything you’d expect in a mesh jacket and the quality seems okay, but the Aquasport he’s been very disappointed with. The “waterproof breathable liner” seems to be nothing but a sheet of rubberized clear plastic, like what a child’s inflatable water toy is made from. And breathable my ass, the vents are worthless because air doesn’t get through the waterproof liner.

I have a waterproof jacket with a built-in liner too so I have something to compare it to. Mine (the Teknic Freestyle) does have a “breathable waterproof liner” and yes the liner does cut down significantly on the airflow, but it is still sufficient in that jacket for 85 degree weather provided all you’re wearing underneath is a T-shirt, because the vents actually do SOMETHING.

As far as their zippers go, they don’t seem to have any trouble with my dad’s jackets. I’ve only seen one riding jacket that had crappy zippers and that was my Joe Rocket Atomic 3.0.

It’s pretty good stuff, especially for the price (though as WeaponZero points out, don’t believe their “waterproof but breathable” line when it comes to their liners). Quality can be hit or miss though, BUT they do stand behind their products if you let them know there’s a problem.

One of the snaps on the upper arm cinch straps fell out on my High-Flow Mesh jacket (in my avatar above). I got a Fieldsheer customer service rep’s name from Motorcyclecloseouts.com (where I got the jacket), and talked to her. Not only did the company fix the strap, but they also re-sewed some cosmetic stitching that was coming loose on the cuff. My jacket was under warranty, so no charge, and got it back, good as new about a week later.

I also wear the company’s Titanium Air mesh pants, but haven’t had any problems yet.

NewEnough should be able to give you the contact info for the latest Fieldsheer rep, but if not, let me know and I’ll give you what I have (might be out of date, as it was awhile ago).
