Since the Forum said to introduce myself, then by golly that’s what I’m gonna do!

Hi my name is Britney and I’ve stumbled into a recent motorcylce obbsession (it wasn’t hard to fall into it)
before I never liked bikes that much.. now I find myself CONSTANTLY on the internet looking up information on them and whatnot. I’m about to take the MSF course so I can get into it. I’m not getting much support from loved ones, friends, or hell.. even my own boyfriend (who by the way got me into them!)

I keep getting things like “you can’t do that.. you’re not “big” enough” “you’ll never be able to hold a bike up” I’ll just go ahead and tell you that I’m 5’6″ and my weight kind of fluctuates between118-120. So, I am a bit on the smaller side, However, lack of support or not, I’m so damn determined to prove that I can ride that bike because I want to so bad!! Which is really why I’ve come to like visiting this site. Lots of good information for Noobies like me. haha

It’s gonna be a little hard to look at what bike I want until after I take the MSF course.. but I’m really considering either the Ninja 250r or the SV650. BIG leap huh? I’ve narrowed it down to these two because I don’t really like the GS500F (it’s quite a bit heavier than the other two per the official websites) and I’ve read some OK review but not great.. plus the weight thing. And these seem to be the top 2 bikes that I hear are really good for beginners. I keep going back and forth due to personal likes and dislikes (not what I think I will look more “badass” on or enhances my girly figure without “making my butt look big”) I could care less about how girly I look. You know those chicks who dress in all pink with a pink bike? Yeah.. not me. I just love the ride (well.. on the back seat so far) and I love the way riding a motorcycle makes me feel.. I feel so open and free. I love the adrenaline rush I get as well! I really don’t like Kawasakis though for personal reasons and I prefer the SV.. any suggestions?

Oh, and please introduce yourself to me. I love meetig people :)

At your weight, seriously think about getting an sv650 as a second bike. Go with the ninja 250 and learn how to ride it. The sv650 is a pretty heavy bike… about 40 lbs heavier than the 250. You’ll have much more issues learning to negotiate tight slow turns on the sv650 and if you’re just a hair off balance stopping on the sv650, it will be a bear to save and you’ll most likely drop it. I dropped my sv650s twice the first 2 days I rode it. I’ve lost focus a couple of times coming to stops and just barely saved dropping it. I’m not saying you’ll never be able to ride an sv650, but with the ninja 250, you’ll gain confidence, experience, better technique faster which will transfer over when you do upgrade to a bigger bike. That’s just my opinion, but take it with a grain of salt, as I started on the sv650s as my first bike with my only riding experience being the MSF course… or take it from someone who’s experienced the issues of starting off on a bigger bike first… anyhoo, welcome to the forums! And yes, motorcycling is addictive as hell… ^_^

Thanks for the soon feedback. Ive definitly come to the conclusion I am small… haha. I do like the SV more but it’s probably just to out of the question by now. I’ve read somany good things about that little Kawasaki 250.. even people saying that they “downgraded” from their ZX12R to the 250! That says SOMETHING about that little Kawi. The more I see it, the more I like it. But I seriously doubt I’ll end up with a brand new one, even though they are so inexpensive!

Well not exactly small, just lighter on the weight end. at 5’6″, you shouldn’t have any issues at least getting both the balls of your feet on the ground at the same time on the sv650. It’s just that the sv650 is a big bike weight wise. For first time riders, I don’t think any of them are really ever prepared for how heavy a bike like the sv650 is. While you get used to handling it, the weight makes it harder to negotiate slow speed maneuvers until you get used to it. Like I said, I’m not saying you’ll never be able to ride a bike bigger or heavier than a ninja 250, I’m just saying that starting off small is a good thing. I have to admit, that if I had to choose a 1st bike all over again, I would definately go for a used ninja 250.

Welcome!! I agree with Megaspaz. The Ninja 250 is not only lighter, it’s just a kick to ride! For what it’s worth I think you’d enjoy it more than you realize. If you don’t mind me asking, why don’t you like Kawasaki bikes?

I’m not sure. My boyfriend got a brand new ZX6R (07) and I’ve been riding with him on that. You would think that Kawasakis leave a special place with me since that reason… but he’s had lots of problems with it. And I just have some bad feelings against it for that. That and it just got stolen… haha.Just this tuesday. Maybe that’s why I’m not too fond of them. However, I do really really like the Blue 250r.. it’s sexy! that will probably be my first bike just because It’s light and managable… as long as I can get a blue one. The Kawasaki Green is just abou the only thing that turns me off about Kawasakis (appearance wise)

Would it really be smart to get a new 250? I know I’m gonna drop it. I’ll probably still keep it for a while haha.
And yes, Megaspaz… I actually can sit quite comfortably on it. I mean… I sat on my boyfriend’s ZX6R and I could comfortably put my feet on the ground. :) that helps I guess lol

Aside from the old 250s looking ugly compared to the sv650s with full fairings or the new ones being impossible to find and thus dealers charging way more than what I think they should be charging?

    :-P

    /me ducks and runs…. VVVVROOOOMMMM!!!

Come on now, the 07 and older 250’s and 500’s are about the coolest looking bikes around.

Kawasaki’s are known for their ugliness :) What other company would pick bright lime green as their official color?
