Hi there. I’ve been lurking on the site for a while now, and just thought I’d say hello and also thanks for all the great information. I’m in Maryland (Bethesda, just outside DC), and I’ll be taking my MSF course in October. I passed my learner’s permit exam a few weeks ago, and hope to be buying a bike in the next couple of weeks (really, whenever a local dealership gets a good beginner-friendly bike in or when I can dig up a great deal on a hardly used Ninja 250).
I’ve been reading the forums regularly, poured through Proficient Cycling and Flick of the Wrist 2, bought my helmet and jacket over the weekend, and now can’t wait to actually get a bike and start practicing and having a great time.
So, anyway… hi.

Unfortunately, the market works, and with dealerships out of stock sellers are asking some pretty high prices for 250s and still finding a buyer in just a day or two.
I’ve also been pretty underwhelmed with the local dealerships, where I’ve found many salespeople to be apathetic and, when they do offer ideas, are clearly just trying to push the most powerful bike they think they can nudge me into (beginner rider concerns be damned). I did manage to find one local dealership with fantastic service–incredibly knowledgeable and helpful staff–but they only carry Yamaha, HD, Buell, and Dukati, which doesn’t offer many options in beginner oriented rides (Blast, Sportster, and FZ6 really weren’t on the top of my list).
