Hi there. I have some experience waaaay back there in the day of running several different kinds of dirtbikes, wrecking them, dusting off and doing some more. Honestly it was so far back there, that I consider myself a BRAND SPANKING new rider.

I am setting it up, taking the course, getting a small bike, joining this site, etc etc. and this morning I had an interesting conversation with a man selling a 1987 Suzuki 185. Looks like a nice little streetbike. 185cc, smaller. Then he drops the bomb that it is WAY too powerful for a newbie. He goes on to say that it has a 2 stroke engine which is waaaay too much for a starter bike.

Is this true? Should I be looking for a 4 stroke?

Eventually I am looking to buy a 2008 Honda Rebel, beautiful bike and all I have read here, seems perfect for what I want to do. However, about that 2 stroke thing and the ’87 Suzuki 185, is this guy right?

What might be some specs to look for when shopping for a used that I can learn on ?
Maybe just some ballpark specs would help.

Thank you so much guys :)

All I know about 2 stroke vs 4 stroke (via my dirt biker sister) is you get more direct power out of a smaller displacement with a 2 stroke, and they smoke like a sumbeech.
