I’m going to pick up my first bike tomorrow (this morning by the time you read this). I would love to tell you how I found it and the whole story but right now I have a technical question that needs answering before I throw down $3k tomorrow.
I am looking at a 2003 SV650S. Everything is stock except turn signals, a fender eliminator, and a new chain & sprocket. At 14,000 miles I expected some wear and tear when I went to take a look at it tonight, but it is clean! Starts up, sounds fine, looks great, no drips, no weird noises, no signs of anything out of the ordinary. When I did an electronics check, everything works perfect except when I hit the foot brake, the brake light doesn’t come on in the back. I asked him about it and he says he wondered about that too, but he couldn’t find any wiring for it so he didn’t worry about it since he uses the hand brake every time and the brakes come on with the hand brake. I thought this was strange, but sure enough, I got up close and personal with the foot brake system and there is no wiring that looks like it should be there, not even an area where it looks like it might have been there at one point. I didn’t even see a place where a wire could even hook into the foot brake system if it was supposed to! I’ve never seen this before. Could it actually be true that 2003 SV650’s didn’t have the brake light come on when you push the foot brake?? IDK what to think, but everything else on the bike checks out, it’s a great deal, and I can’t find anything wrong with it, so I’m going to head up tomorrow morning after I read your posts and throw down (unless you stop me).
Let me know STAT…

Congrats on the good find! This is MOST LIKELY not an issue at all. As you can adjust the brake levers and pedal on most bikes, you need a way to adjust when the brake light turns on. For instance, if you lower the brake pedal, you need to make the brake light come on later than it normally would since it’s new resting position would have meant the brake was on at the previous position.
The SV650 definitely does not lack brake light under rear braking. Most likely the brake light trigger needs adjustment. Either way, doesn’t sound like a big hangup, but the next time you see the bike, take a look for it. Here’s a relevant page from an SV forum:

If it’s possible to do, a good bike shop will be able to make the brake light work with the pedal. Obviously make sure that the rear brake works, and that it can hold the bike. You can fix the wiring issue later. When I got my bike, I had to depress the pedal further than I like for the light to come on, so I adjusted it so that it would come on earlier.
Lets see some pictures once you get it.

After I got the bike in my custody, I had a good look around and found the switch, pulled on it, and BINGO, the light came on. I just need to jerry-rig the switch to the foot break or buy that cheap spring…
