Hey everyone, my name is Robbie. First off just wanna say that the site is awesome! The articles are good and it looks like i will be here awhile! Anyway…
I’m 23 from Dayton, Ohio…Im about 5’10 and 200lbs and im gonna ask a question that everyone is SICK of hearing probably! lol! What should I get for my first bike?
I “owned” a 1975 honda CB400 for a while, it was my dad’s old bike that I tried to fix up. I sunk a little over 500 into it but he wont get a title and I moved out (I live about 1hr away) and took his big screen so yeah… that trip is over with. I liked the bike the little I rode it up and down our back country street but im not here to talk about that, im here to talk about what NEW bike I should get.
I have 3 friends that I will need to “keep up” with, they own…
Kawasaki Z1000
Suzuki GS500F
Suzuki GSXR600Now before the new ninja 250 came out I was debating on the hyosung 250 but their unreliability has me worried so yeah… Im considering the kawi a little more. But considering my size I think a bigger bike would be better. You add some gear and probably a backpack and your looking at 225-250lbs!
I really like the GS500e and used they can be found relatively cheap (i hate the looks of the 500f, esp. the blue white scheme that my friend owns. Shhh!) but when i sat down on his it felt too low to the ground… I have very long legs and a short torso… so im debating on it. I do not think it will be very comfortable but I need to ride it around a bit.
The ninja 500 looks like the perfect bike to me but..
ITS FREAKIN UGLY!
Why cant it look like the 250? Hmm?
Another friend said to look at the suzuki katana… but I think 600 is too much to start with.
AARGH! What to do? Please help!
I want to look sporty with out actually being sporty… well maybe a lil but… At least I dont want to kill myself doing it!

You’ll learn a lot more, and more quickly, on a smaller bike than you will on a larger bike. Plus, wringing the heck out of a small bike is more fun than putting around on a big bike.
That said, the GS500E is a good starter bike. Not too much power. Cheap to insure. Simple to maintain. Light enough to handle easily at low speeds. Given the scarcity of new Ninja 250s I think a used GS500E would make a good beginner motorcycle. You’ll have to try one on and see how it fits.
I still miss my 1975 Honda CB400F. I spent many happy miles on that bike and learned a lot riding it.

Yeah the ninja’s are hard to find and the price on them is being jacked up because of demand, so im really looking at teh gs… also I will frequently ride highway and i don’t want to have to keep it pegged at like 9k to go 75-80… so its not really the best option.
I found a gs500f in my area, its a 2004 with 11k, 1 owner, well maintained and never dropped with a laundry list of mods… it looks pretty good! Is 2800 a good price? I thought so, my friend got his new and paid close to 7k OTD.
My dad has the CB400F in his garage if you want another one! lol! I got it running, got new mirrors, seat cover, tank and sidecovers painted color matched to the original varnish blue, carbs cleaned and re-synched, new tires… the only thing it needs is a new side stand and maybe a new 4 into 1 exhaust, its pitted and rusted. Anyways…
What I don’t understand is why more companies shy away from making more low cc bikes, like in the 300-500 range?!?!
Something that is capable of crusing on the highway but not overpowered.
