Participantmegaspaz (not the emo from vampirefreaks.com
), a.k.a. Vince. I’m living in Sunnyvale, working in Mountain View and just started my riding career which breaks down as such:
My mother and father were married in… haha just kidding… d-:
Did the MSF training 3 weeks ago.
Got M class added to license the next day.
Got my first bike the next day after that. Had a friend ride it to the garage at work so I could practice more at night in the empty parking lot and little street traffic.
Took it out on 101 for the first time today.Never rode a motorized 2 wheeler in my life, well not counting the motorized foot scooters we use at work to get to different buildings…
Anyhoo, I’ve been lurking this site for a while now and I’ve just been so impressed with the content and knowledge on this site that I just felt compelled to sign up. Good work guys!
Well, I look forward to learning more and being a productive member, if not with knowledge, at least with gibberish. Without further adieu, I’m off to post my first n00b question. ^__^
Keep on having fun! Duck Dodgers out!

ParticipantHola Megaspaz!
What type of bike did you get? You don’t happen to work at google do you? I saw some guy on an SV650 cruising around today on campus, he looked like he was getting the hang of the bike.

ParticipantYeh, I work there. If it was around 7 – 9 am-ish, then yeh, that was me. And yeh, I’m trying to get the hang of it. The sv650 isn’t as forgiving at uber slow speeds like the ninja 250, but I’m getting there. Practice makes perfect… at least that’s what I’ve heard… ^__^

ParticipantPractice does indeed make perfect
I think they also recently paved the shoreline which would be perfect for parking lot drills.

ParticipantI go down to our buildings at the end of Crittendon Lane. Huge parking lot with lots of straights, stop signs, 90 degree turns, and little traffic and people after hours. Too many islands and parking spaces to do ovals though, but still a good lot, imo, for doing stops, emergency stops, and turns none-the-less… (-:

ParticipantJust yesterday I was reminded of this fact as I’ve been a little lax about practicing the hard stops. I was pulling out of a parking lot onto a freeway feeder road and looked up to realize that a line of cars in front of me had come to a dead stop. I grabbed the front brake and stomped on the back brake a little to heavily and the back tire lost traction. I skidded about 6 or 7 feet but thank god I had enough room that I stopped with about four feet to spare.
I had been feeling pretty cavalier lately thinking “hey, I’ve got this stuff down”. I’m just glad that the experience that brought be back to humbling reality didn’t result in injury or accident. Back to the parking lot for regular practice thank you very much.
