ParticipantNew Suzy owner here … K8 GSX650F. Checked out the wee Strom and GSX650F for several weeks.
My prime interests are commuting and touring. Commute could be 60 miles round trip, with some portion on interstate. My type touring will be paved roads, not gravel/dirt. Based on all the great info I was able to find on various sites, I concluded:
>> GSX will be the more stable at interstate speeds.
>> GSX has fewer wind issues at speed.
>> Strom is likely somewhat easier to handle in town because it’s so much lighter.
>> GSX is more suitable for touring on pavement.
So GSX it was for me!!
This will be my first motorcycle, but no 1st motorbike. Have been riding a 150cc scooter for couple years.
Also been riding/racing bicycles for 30 years!! Tooooooooo old for racing bicycles now, but I still love to go fast, do challenging (= hilly!) day rides, and multi day/week touring. I hope to continue these interests on a bike that happens to include a motor!
Looking forward to learning all that I can and the great advice on this site as I turn my bike into fine commuter and touring machine!!!October 24, 2009 at 6:00 pm #23017owlie
ParticipantI have to admit that I never quite saw the attraction of loading down a bicycle with a week’s worth of camping gear, though I have a handful of coworkers that think it is a great time… Oh, wait, I never quite figured out camping as a good time!
Congrats on the new GSX and welcome to the group.

ParticipantHey, it’s great to hear from someone who has the GSX650F. I think it’s an awesome bike, and definitely one that I would consider moving up to. From a distance, it looks a lot like the GS500F which I have, but it’s definetly a bigger, more … hmmmm, what’s the word I’m looking for… just MORE, I guess. When I was looking for my first bike, the price, size, and weight of the GSX650F was a little intimidating to me, since I was so new to everthing. However, I had the opportunity to sit on one at the dealer about a month ago and it felt much more comfortable. It think it will handle touring for you pretty well. Gotta love the additional bells and whistles that it has over my GS500F. I look forward to hearing how it does for you. Also, when you get the chance, we’d love to see a picture or two of it.
