I can safely say that this is the most helpful motorcycle website I have seen yet! I am very interested in beginning riding once I get my driver’s permit (Right now I am 14 years old; I live in Pennsylvania and I think the law says that as soon as you get a learner’s permit, you are allowed to take learner’s classes and take the test to get your license)
After reading the articles in the Beginner Motorcycle Guides section, sometimes I feel like I wanna put a down payment on one, other times I think I was crazy for even considering it, with all of the stuff about belt sanders, road rash, and skin vacuuming. Oh, and don’t forget about death.
Also I am worried that my parents will not agree with my decision if I decide to buy a motorcycle, and I totally understand. If I had a son I wouldn’t encourage him to jump on a 2-wheeled death trap. But I think that if I take all of the safety courses and wear proper protection(I will do both) they might feel better about it, and so would I.
So I’m thinking about getting either a Suzuki Hayabusa or maybe a Ninja ZX6R…….. Just kidding! I’m considering the Ninja 250R because it gets great gas mileage, doesn’t look like a beginner bike, and pretty much every place I look gave it positive reviews.
This is sort of an intro as well as me explaining my “situation”…

I went through jitters myself…. anticipation is worse then anything…. you mind can come up with every negative scenario imaginable. As young as you are…try for a dirt bike or scooter… get some experience of sorts under your belt… and grabbing an opportunity to prove to your parent (and yourself) that are being safe and responsible.Yesterday is a memory, tomorrow is a prediction, but today…… is a Bi**h

Also, I have a hunch that 70% of motorcyclists who DIE in an accident are either 1) they are intoxicated, 2) they are stunting or going very fast, or 3) just something generally stupid. Another great reason to get it is because our house has a 3-car garage. 2 of the bays store cars, the last one stores our junk, such as the mower and bicycles. A motorcycle would save the space constraint problem. I wouldn’t be very happy if I had to leave my car outside in the blistering heat of summer and the frigid ice of winter.
I don’t see a dirt bike happening, as I live in a suburban area, and I just did a quick google search and they seem pretty expensive…. Now when you say scooter, what do you mean by that? an electric one like this? Clicky
or maybe like this?

Maybe you can leave a Bike Rag on the table or something that gives subtle hints … or even books …. Many on here have mentioned some great books that would give them the implication that you are looking to learn to ride correctly and safely. Heck even one night before bed leave this site up in a window in hopes that they see the last thing you looked at. I know if my daughters were seriously looking to start riding and I can see that they are looking into the safety more then “Trick weekly” I would be more inclined to listen.

Of course you will need parental approval and all, but this might be a way to easy into riding. My son is 9 and I’m thinking that in a year or so I will take him to this class to get him some experience (he is very keen about motorcycles now that I have one). If you think that something like this is possible, even one of your parents can take the class and experience the learning process with you. This class is just another resource for you to learn about motorcycles and what kind of experience is needed to ride one.
At your age, the process of getting acceptance from your parents will be a slow process that will try your patience. You will need to convince them that you have the maturity to understand the responsibility of riding a motorcycle and following through with this responsibility everytime you ride. In a car its alittle easier for a parent to accept that a young adult driving because you are in a protective cage. The cage is not present in a motorcycle.
Good luck…

Maybe next time my dad and I go to the library, I can get a book on motorcycles (safety would be good, if they have it). Maybe that would help, and the website thing is a good idea as well.
As for the dirtbike class, this works out perfectly because my dad and I want to get involved in motorsports together. We were thinking about taking an endurance karting school, but maybe I can convince him to do this. The only problem is to further develop my ability, I’d probably need to buy one… who knows, maybe if my dad and I both try it, he would be interested enough to maybe look into buying one.
As stated several times, patience will be key here, and I’ll be sure to gradually work my way into it. But that dirtbike learning/safety course definitely sounds good, I’ll call the nearest location to get a price.
