Hi, everyone, name’s Tony, I’m from central NC. I registered here hoping I can help out new riders with advice and maybe encourage people to tell the motorcycle companies that we want more small bikes in this country!
Here’s my story. I started out riding on a LARGE cruiser, a Yamaha Roadstar, and when I switched to sport after wrecking that thing all over the roads I went to a 1000cc Yamaha FZ-1. I did this largely due to a mistaken perception that a smaller biker wouldn’t carry my large butt
I was lucky, I’m a disciplined sort and I rode within my limits and learned to be fast without being unsafe. I still have that bike, and every time I get a new toy it’s smaller than the last. I now ride and track a modified YZF-R6, and am looking into a Super Motard, because they’re the only lightweight street bikes left on the market in the States, it seems.
Ever since I got my R6 and started to really explore the limits of a middleweight supersport, the perception that they’re somehow beginner’s bikes has really gotten under my skin. I hope I can help to dispel that silly idea and stir up some desire that will bring 250s and 400s back to the production lines and into the US. I started big and all my experiences tell me that small and light is where it’s at, and I want them as much for myself as I do for newbies to learn on
Thanks for reading my ramble, and I look forward to a good time on this site!

I think the huge deficiency in US-available small-displacement bikes is really sad, and one of the unfortunate side-effects of our nationwide obsession with size. That said, I’m all about running my GSX-R600 track-style, but I just caved and got a supermoto bike myself. I highly recommend it, especially as a change of pace from all the sport track riding.
Welcome, and feel free to ramble on!

Whilst waiting I decided to try on a couple of bikes. The Suzuki GS500f…… I don’t know if I have ridden horses to long or I just aint built that way or what but there is no way a sport bike will ever happen for me. My feet just don’t tuck like that. Whats up with the itty bitty pegs? Tried a Bigger Ninja and even tried to squat on Gixxer…… nuh uh…aint happenin. Next step around the corner was a Kawi Concourse. I had been eyeing a Connie for a while..however but test tells me “Oh hell no!” Same problem…ergos do not fit an old country boy such as myself.
Now the real winner that had me stumbling for the door in a bid to save my credit rating…… The Kawi Nomad 1700….. man what a Cadillac. This bike scr3eams comfort touring. It’s a cruiser thing I guess.
I do agree however on smaller for starters. Talked to a guy today that was thinking his only option for a first bike would be a Suzu C50t. Took a while and he almost budged but he is hell bent, just hoping he aint hell bound when all is said and done.
My style is not zipping through town on the biggest or smallest bike for the sake of speed. I like the open air, cinematic view of the world. I like touring and taking loooooong scenic routes at my leisure.
BTW…. Where in Central NC? I am in the Triangle area.December 10, 2009 at 2:35 am #23667XRayHoundParticipantTriad. Just point it down I40W for about an hour and you’ll be in the backyard The rain we’ve been having lately is driving me batty, I miss the drought from last year!
I’m just the opposite, ergonomically speaking. Even when I’m sitting on a chair or a stool, it’s more comfortable for me to have my legs tucked behind me. I often actually hook my toes/ankles around the front legs if it’s a free standing four poster chair. No idea why. Skeletal variations I guess Long rides on my Roadstar left me sore and miserable in ways even my R6 doesn’t duplicate, much less my rather comfy and spacious FZ-1.
Thanks for the welcome guys, I think I’m gonna like it here.
December 10, 2009 at 4:18 am #23668MunchParticipantSweet, we will have to get a ride sometime. I ride constantly…few things stop me….Ice/snow, my kids and Lightning. Rode into work this morning as a matter of fact. Love all the looks I get in wet and cold weather!
Stick around great group we have here….very little drama, if there is any usually me and Elwood just kicking up debate in a gentlemen fashion . You ever see a guy on a Blue and Black cruiser be sure to wave… might be me!
