Helllo. I’m a post graduate student from Malaysia currently studying at The Australian National University, Canberra, Australia. I found your site very usefull. Eventhough I have riden motorbike / scooter for the last 10 years, I never owned anything bigger than a 150cc motorbike. Therefore, I felt that your choices of bike for beginners really suit me.
Curently I ride a Bug Bandit. A small scooter (50cc) but still gives me the thrill of riding and cheap on fuel. I certainly miss my Suzuki FX150 and my Honda Cub 100cc which were both sold before I came to Australia 3 months ago.
I’m considering to buy a proper motorbike, not scooter. I love the looks of the Honda CBR125, but the new bike is expensive in Australia (AUD$5,000). Second hand is difficult to find since they were just introduced at the end of last year in Australia.
Other second hand options within similar price range (about AUD$5,000) and available in Australia include Yamaha XV250 Virago, Kawasaki ZZR250, Kawasaki GPX250 (old Ninja 250), Suzuki VL250 Intruder, Suzuki GSX250F Across, Suzuki RGV250, Suzuki GSF250 Bandit, Hyosung GT250R, Honda CBR250RR, Honda VT250C, Honda VTR 250, Honda CB250 and Honda Hornet 250.
I’m a rather short guy, 163cm tall and weigh 65kg. I love the sound of a 250cc sportbikes but prefer something more upright and relaxing to ride. Any suggestions are welcomed. Thank you in advance.

I can’t really give you any concrete advise on choosing one class of bike over the other, but from what you said you want, you’ll probably want to go for a cruiser or a normal, non-sport bike. At the MSF, we used honda rebels and nighthawks. The rebel, I really hated and the nighthawk was rather meh for me. I myself, find my sv650s comfortable and have ridden it for about 2 1/2 hours straight a couple of times with no ill effects (that I could tell). If you search the posts, someone here had a decent high level difference between cruisers and sports bikes. It’d either be in this topic area or in the general topic area.
