Have you done something that makes you feel dumb?

The first day I had my bike, or maybe the second, I almost dropped it in my driveway. I just wasn’t thinking, and I got off of it without putting the kickstand down. My thought was that I would walk the bike to where I wanted it from beside it, like I would my bicycle. And I knew that the way to turn it around was while you were on it, because we did that in the MSF course. But I just wasn’t thinking.
I realized that this was a stupid thing to do immediately, so I was able to keep the bike upright. But if I were a smaller person, I’m pretty sure I would have dropped it. I basically had to muscle it to keep it up, and it was pretty tough. That experience has definitely made me be more careful when dismounting though (I always check the kickstand twice), so I count it as a positive experience. But I definitely felt pretty dumb, but I would have felt way worse if I had dropped it.
Do you guys have any experiences doing something dumb when you weren’t thinking straight? I figure if someone else can learn from our dumb mistakes, that’s always good.

June 25, 2009 at 9:15 pm #20215SantaCruzRiderParticipantKidding. I’ve never done anything like that on a bike, but I understand that “forgot to put the kickstand down” is one of the top answers on one of the “Connie (Concours) Droppers Anonymous Groups”.
If it makes you feel better, I’ve had my own moments – my favorite being the time my ex had a spill in the yard and I needed to rush her to the doctor. I put her in the backseat of my SUV, drove to the front on the house and then jumped out to roll the driveway fence open. As I jogged to the gate, I glanced over to see my car passing me. Luckily the gate was still closed and the car was moving slow enough for it to hold it while I jumping into the window and shut her off. I bet that look REAL COOL for the neighbors.

For me, it wasn’t that I forgot to put the kickstand down, it’s that I decided not to. I’m not actually sure if this is better or worse than forgetting.
June 25, 2009 at 10:00 pm #20221SafetyFirstParticipantI hardly ever put the kickstand down, but my bike never drops.
Centerstand FTW (that’s for the win, for you non-techno dweebs.)
All kidding aside, this post of mine has two of mine.

June 26, 2009 at 2:42 am #20228SantaCruzRiderParticipantJeez, I’m laughin’ just thinking about that. Did she help you get it restarted too?!?!
June 26, 2009 at 2:48 am #20229briderdtParticipantNo. Actually her husband and sons all rode, so it’s something she’d done before. Got back in her car, told me to take a few minutes before I got going again… I kept telling her I rally hadn’t gotten trapped at all, that I just stepped off it and set it down easy.
