A co-worker just sent me this photo, from a friend’s group ride. The original occupant of that helmet is now deceased.
You can see the helmet is smashed in on one side, ground down on the top and side. Since those aren’t where you hit first, the face and jaw couldn’t be pretty.

And I’ve still got all kind of crazy wildlife on my ride. The last week I’ve been seeing a deer every morning crossing the road by a river. Last night I saw it laying down in the grass between the road and the neighboring field. Monday another, larger deer was standing in the middle of the road just around a blind curve, and a little further down the road two dogs were running a steer through somebody’s garden. The deer, I’m used to, but there aren’t even any cattle near that location. No idea where the dogs found the steer.

So many things we can prepare for but deer are so quick popping out of the brush I don’t know if there is much that you can do in the way of avoidance. I believe in of David Hough’s books he says that a close friend of his, one of the best and safest riders he knew was killed by a deer strike.
Riding a few weeks ago near New Hope, PA a small fawn skittered in front of me. Plenty of room for me to slow down, and of course it was not moving nearly as fast as an adult, and obviously wasn’t as big or muscular as an adult, but it definitely sent a little shiver up my spine; they’re out there.

I didn’t want anything that would be uncomfortable enough to tempt me to ride without it. Went with the modular helmet from Shoei. Well vented enough when riding with the face down, but if you get hot at a light or in traffic, easy enough to flip the whole front up & out of the way until you are in moving air again.
Also pleased with my jacket — scorpion Exo hat-trick. Been riding without any of the liners in the summer sun and it is EXTREMELY will vented/breathable. Even when summer heat hits 90+ out here in sunny Colorado, I’m sure I will still be cool. Can’t speak yet to how waterproof or warm the 2 different liners are, but 1st impression is great.
