I was very excited today to be picking up my new gs500 from the dealer… my first bike! … until I got about 1 mile from the lot and it died out on me… within a 2 mile round trip it died out 5 times… untill i found you can turn the fuel petcock to prime and, aside from the fuel smell, it will run…. but when in the “on” position will stall out when the clutch is pulled in or when idling in neutral… needless to say it is back at the dealership being serviced after only a couple hours of ownership… :o( I’ve found several people describing this problem in other online forums, but noone seems to have solutions and the guys at the dealership say they have never seen it before… anything I can suggest to them so that they can fix it and i can hopefully ride it ALL THE WAY home tomorrow?

My bike came from the dealership with very little fuel in the tank. I would have had to switch it to the RESERVE setting had I not gassed it up. It’s a pretty simplistic explanation and I’m sure the dealership thought of it, but did you just run out of gas?

nah the tank was full of gas… fortunately, after re-doing the entire fuel system it works wonderfully :-)

yeah, i got mine form the dealership as well and it worked fine for me. Ive had my permit for 2-3 days and have already banked 110 miles on it haha. I love this thing.

I didnt get any issues with mine when receiving it but i’m glad to hear you got it all fixed up. enjoy riding it, it’s a fun bike.

How is the riding position on it is it way leaned over or a bit more upright..im considering the 500 E/F my brother on law has the Gixxer 600 and I DONT like the position on that..way too hunched/leaned over for my liking..I did not mind the position on the 2005 Ninja i sat on for a while and I liked it on the Buell Blast.

GS500f have a nice comfortable upright position like a sv650 or Ninja 650.

I was actually considering putting a lower rise handlebar on it, it’s so upright.

What’s up with the fuel system on a GS500? I’ve had mine for two years and I’ve had to take it in twice for fuel problems (they call it surging). The shop has done all kinds of work and replaced parts but they still can’t tell me what the exact problem is. Other then that it is a great bike.

There are several sources that cite a fuel problem with the GS500, particularly the petcock issue. When I took mine to the dealer to be fixed they too could not decide what the problem was, but the overhaul of the fuel system was effective… for now. other than that it is a great bike with the sportbike look yet the more upright sitting position. as a first bike i’ve been able to handle it (except for the fact that it weighs 4 times me and i need help picking it up if i drop it lol) … for a sportbike, i would recommend it anytime
