Gear Body Armor

I am interested in purchasing body armor for back protection specifically. Went to the motorcycle gear shop last week saw alpine stars spine protector and other spine protectors but they just looked so hokey and felt a bit hokey as well. The alpine star full body armor had a nicer spine and back protection but that one was fairly bulky.

Have been looking for this information around the net but have had trouble finding it for the basic rider. What are the facts about this? Advantages are clear, but do they really help you in the long run? How many wear this for there every day protection am I over thinking safety?

What brand do those who wear body armor recommend.

Any input is very helpful, thanks Ryan.

My jacket has bike armor right in it for the back. It’s visible, with the areas pronounced, but you can get jackets with it all but invisible. Next to your head and neck I’d say your back is the next most important thing to protect. Even slight back injuries can lead to major pain and discomfort for the rest of your life (truely and fully recovering from a back injury is a rare thing). I think when it comes to protection, looks should take a back seat. Thankfully with motorcycle gear, for both sport and cruising, there is plenty of gear that protects and looks awesome too! After you’re injured you don’t want to be stuck with irreparable damage because you placed looking cool over dressing safe. What people you don’t know thinks doesn’t matter (ironic, I know), and the people you do know who are worth anything will want you to dress safe.

I have a cortech jacket. There are plenty though with back armor in them made by most manufacturers. I’d suggest checking out somewhere like the motorcycle superstore website. It’s almost guaranteed to have something with back armor that will fit the bill for both protection and looks. You can also check out review sites like webBikeWorld.

I bought this Joe Rocket jacket http://www.joerocket.com/productJR.cfm?products_id=1722 . It breaks down nicely in hot weather (95 here now and I still can wear it comfortably) , with the arms and torso breaking down to just a mesh. It has shoulder, elbow and a back spine protector which is removable. I’m pretty happy with it.

i have gear with armor in it as well. Here are some pic’s of the jacket, the arnor that comes in it, as well as Icon’s site with the jacket. As well as a pic of me with all my gear and my bike. I think it looks sweet and it protects me :D

I love my Joe Rocket Cleo jacket too. The whole thing is mesh without the liner, and it has spine, elbow, and shoulder armor. The armor is in velcro pockets in case you need to replace it.
