Hi. I recently bought a used 05 ninja 250 from a dealer and i took it out this weekend. I just went to an industrial park where there was no traffic and went in parking lots to get used to the bike. Well today I went to go early in the morning with traffic and it ended unexpectedly. I was at a stop sign and turned left to go down a road i think i shifted up to 3rd or 4th and heard a snap. My clutch cable snapped on my bike on my first ride that i was furtherest from home. I pulled it to the side of the road and got off. I didn’t know what to do and don’t have a cell phone so started walking home because that is all I could think of at the time. Luckily after work (My friend and I work 3rd shift) my friend came over and asked if I wanted to go riding. I said yeah and he said he would go home and get his bike and to tell me when I was ready. I wanted to go on a short ride first to get comfortable in traffic. So after I hadn’t responded to his messages online he came to see if I fell asleep. My parents said I had left after he did so he came looking for me. About an hour and a half of walking or more he found me. I told him what happened and asked him to go look at the bike because I was afraid the cops would tow it and he knew a guy at work that got his towed and they just put it on the flat bed, pushed it over and tied it down so it got all scratched up on the way up. I got home and he came back and said he got it to roll so we went back over there and he managed to get it into neutral and was able to get it in gear and rode it home for me. Now I’ve had the bike for a week and got it from a dealer. Do you guys think I should call the dealer and see if they will fix it for me for free or should I try to get a cable and do it myself. The cable would be about 20 bucks. I just got a service manual for the bike from Amazon in the mail today that tells how to replace the cable. On one hand I just got it and feel like the dealer should fix it but on the other hand it may be a good experience to try it myself in case I have to do it to another bike in the future. And one thing to mention is a guy at work said that this place I got my bike from will do extra work that isn’t needed to the bike when you have it in there to charge you more so he told me not to go to them and that he will help me if I have any problems, so if that is the case I don’t know how comfortable I would feel taking my bike to them. So I am curious what you guys would do in my situation? Thanks for reading and thanks for any responses in advance.

If you bought as is, then I want to say you’d be hosed by the dealer… but even in this case, there may be some laws that would work in your favor. But there is the convenience of you fixing it yourself for only ~20 bucks and not having to wait for the dealer’s service queue and learning something in the process… So whatever you feel comfortable doing… Just bear in mind, if you hose this doing it yourself, you’ve left yourself in a bad position if something goes wrong with the bike afterwards.
