I was looking up the specs on the savage, and it’s really one of the prime examples of how you can’t just look at the cc’s to determain beginner friendlyness. yeah it’s a 650cc, but (i’m going from the 2003 model reviewed on totalmotorcycle.com) it’s a single cylinder air cooled engine putting out about 30hp

compared to the hyosung gv 250 which is a V-twin air/oil cooled engine with 26.82hp, so just a hair over 3hp more, despite the savage having triple the cc’s

for the record the V-Star 650 is about 40hp and is 471lbs dry

so, yeah I can understand there being a bit of vibration at highway speeds even though you’re on a “650” definately a beginner friendly sized bike. and not at all bad looking either. asthetically, I prefer the look of a Vtwin to most thumpers, but performance wise, I don’t know what difference a twin will have over a single. I’m sure someone can chime in and answer that ;)

Not sure why I thought you were on a Rebel. I’m surprised the 650 wasn’t more comfortable at that speed. I actually live down in Bloomington but I have family up in Lisle that visit.

No problem, I can’t remember what everyone rides. Have you ridden your bike from Bloomington up to Lisle? That would be a nice ride. My brother and I are toying with the idea of riding our bikes to visit our Mom in Sault Ste. Marie Canada next summer, it’s about an hour past Mackinaw. It’s about an 8 hour car ride though so I don’t know how I’m going to like being on the bike for that long, especially since the speed limit through MI is 70mph. In addition to that, my brother mentioned he would go 100mph the whole way there. I don’t think that would work for me.

I think my husband and I attended a Halloween party at a hotel in Bloomington years ago, it looks like a castle, I can’t remember the name at the moment.

I drive up to Grand Rapids, MI all the time and hope to ride up there eventually. I’d really like to work up to even longer distances, but my body is taking it’s time to work up the endurance. So you and your brother ride, but what about your husband?

If you’re bro won’t go the speed you’re comfortable at, don’t ride with your bro. Plan a solo trip. If it takes about 8 hours to get there by car, plan on 9-10 hours for extra rests, gas, and eating. On long trips, map out all the rest stops along your route beforehand and plan to take more rest breaks. Your butt will thank you for the extra stops. ;-)

Thanks Megaspaz, that seems like very wise advice! I will just tell my brother to go at whatever speed he wants and I’ll see him when I get there. He might stop for smoke breaks and wait for me to catch up but if not, then oh well. :)

I go right thru Grand Rapids to go to Sault Ste. Marie. My husband had a bike back in college and he layed it down when he was avoiding some flying tire pieces and hit some gravel (or is that a low side? I don’t know). He was wearing a pair of shorts and a t-shirt. He had only been riding for 2 months at that point. He sold his bike a month later and has no desire whatsoever to ride a motorcycle. So, it’s cool that he was supportive when I told him I was thinking of riding a motorcycle because he doesn’t have very fond memories of his roadrash.

Yeah, regarding endurance, I think my body would need a break, maybe I would ride up 1/2 way, stay overnight somewhere and then ride the rest of the way.

I haven’t ridden up to Lisle yet. My wife actually doesn’t want me riding on the Interstate. That was one of her conditions on me getting a bike. The castle looking hotel was probably Dumers.

I have been thinking about taking the ride up to Ogleby though. The Riders Choice dealership seems to have a good rep and I’ve heard it’s a nice ride. It’s state highways all the way though so my wife doesn’t have to wig out about the Interstate.

My husband also originally said that he didn’t want me on the highway but when I told him I was going to try the highway, he said ok. So I just went with it.

That ride sounds nice. Your wife doesn’t want to ride a motorcycle? Has she been on the back of yours?

Wife has zero interest in getting on the back. She has shown interest in getting a scooter. I’m not ready for a passenger anyway.

riding pillion on a sportsbike sucks. that opinion is born from experience.

3 girlfriends have asked me to take them for a ride, I said no way. I have no desire to carry a passenger. You want to ride, gals, get your own bike. I only want to be responsible for ME.

does it really suck that much? even for short rides? I don’t think I’ll ever do it myself, but I was just considering unfolding my rear pegs and hopping on the back while it’s parked – just to get a feel of it you know. I imagine I’ll be taking passengers next year.
