So, after talking with my brother (he rode a sport bike for years) and him telling me that the SV650 is not good to learn on, I think I’ve settled on a Ninja250 to start with. Good idea, or no? I’m a pretty good sized person. 5-10 @190 pounds. I want to use the motorcycle as a commuter in good weather and park the gas guzzling sports car. I drive probably 20-30 minutes each way. Would the 250 be good for that, or should I look maybe more into something a little bigger? It’s almost all highway miles. Oh, and I plan on spending a lot of time in parking lots before actually trying out the highways first, so I need something that’s beginner friendly.

You should be fine, unless your commute includes steep hill/mountainous climbs. Other than that, the ninja 250 is more than adequate for hauling your butt around… in a beginner friendly way… :-P

Thanks. I just need to get my license now and go check out the 250. The commute is mostly highway with no hills what so ever.

I could be wrong… but wouldn’t a lot of highway miles be really really hard on a 250’s engine? I’d Imagine the RPM would be really high for long periods of time…not good for engine wear and tear.

Only if you’re trying to go 90+ mph all the time.

In sixth gear I cruise at 60-65 mph and the tach is at about 6000-7000 on my 250.

No, the engine is designed for high rpm for prolonged periods of time. Do not worry about wearing out a Ninja 250. There are literally hundreds of people who ride these bikes for extended trips. I’m talking Florida to Alaska.

The ninja is not delicate little flower that has to be babied. Wring its neck, and it just smiles all the more.

Rev it up! Those little engines like it. Even my GS is happiest cruising at 5-6k.

I don’t plan on going that fast. I just want to learn to ride a bike and have some fun on the weekends. Heck, I don’t speed all that much in my Pony car…unless it’s to beat up on a “fast and the furious” civic :)

You all have been very helpful. I appreciate all the input. I can’t wait to get my license so I can go check out the 250.
