Saturday, I met up with my friends Ken and Phil. Ken owns a VStar custom 1100 and Phil is on a lil’ninja like me. We rode over to a martial arts lesson that we were having about 40 miles away. We all have about the same experience and this was the first group ride for all of us. We gave eachother a pretty wide berth while riding in a staggered formation.
We lost Ken a couple of times. Once because he forgot to turn his fuel on after we ate lunch and once because he stalled it. We were able to slow down until he caught up though. I almost got splattered while riding in the middle. I was giving Phil at least 4 seconds in front and Ken was giving me the same while driving down Briley Parkway in Nashville. There is this huge mall, OpryMills, that is right off of Briley. A car comes flying up on my left hand side and then slows down. We are right at the exit for the mall so I know exactly what is going to happen. I engine brake and swerve to the right hand side of the lane just in time to see this guy change lanes in front, would have been on top, of me. Sure enough he takes the exit as I ride up beside him and show him exactly how I feel. Sad thing is, he probably doesn’t know why I was so upset. I think I need a new horn.
Other than that the trip was rather uneventful. Got two hours of Jeet Kun Do training. Learned some things that I didn’t realize about my riding, learned some things about my friends riding. It was a fun and educational experience and I can’t wait to do it again.

Sounds like you were all safety conscious, which is good, but personally, on a group ride, I think 4 seconds distance is too much distance. You’re inviting other vehicles to fill in the gap unexpectedly. Keep at it and have fun!
