I looked at my first bike today, a ’05 Virago 250 with 1300 miles on it. I have only ridden in the MSF class so my only experience is on a Rebel and a Nighthawk. I sat on it for a while and I’m still not sure if a cruiser is for me as a first bike. The position of the shift lever feels iffy. Fine for down shifting but it took some wiggling to get my foot under it for up shifts. Don’t really like the drop handlebars either. Would have liked to have ridden it for validation but their was a problem with the clutch cable. When the clutch was released the bike would stall.
I sat on some other bikes to get an idea what I liked and do like the standard position. There was an ’08 Triumph Bonneville that felt comfortable. I also sat on 2 Kawasaki’s that weren’t bad. An ’04 EX500 Ninja that wasn’t too bad with the pegs and the handlebar position. Really want a 250 though. Also sat on an ’04 ZX10 that was ok in size and height but the handlebars were too low down.
Called a lot of places yesterday about new 250’s and everyone is all out and waiting for ’09 models. Their best guess was maybe September.
A guy 50 miles away has a Blast for sale that might be worth looking at even though it’s bigger than 250. I’ll be commuting in the city so I’m wanting the best mileage I can get. But it’s probably worth looking at the Blast to see how comfortable it is.

It should have more low end torque than say a 250 Ninja BUT as far as the “stats” go the Ninja is actually a bit quicker and revs a lot higher. Id go look at the Blast. I was at the toss up between a Blast a 250 ninja and a GS500..I could not find a single GS500 locally that was a good deal, and the only blasts in my area are new or 1 year old models that were just out of my $$$ range. But the Ninja 250 I just picked up for $1100 was perfect!
