Bought my brothers 2003 Vstar 650. Had to drive from SW Florida to Long Island NY to get it. 24 hour trip going up and 26 hour trip coming back. I threw it into the back of my old conversion van, fit in there quite nicely. It only has 2499 miles on it. It has been sitting for a year so of course the battery is dead. Can some one let me know if a regular battery is OK? I priced some from the dealer ($95.00 + tax) also some other motorcycle shops had them for over $100.00. Walmart or Lowes has them a lot cheaper, but will they work? I was told batteries for motorcycles do not last long…? I guess you would have to get one of those battery tenders if it sits for more than a week…Also, How do You Post pics on this site?

Regular batteries… no I wouldn’t use them…they are set to put out more voltage and amperage that can and will fry the circuitry in the motorcycle. All be it the motorcycle ones are weaker, but for good reason. The reason the battery is dead is due to the time it sat. Once you start riding it regularly the charging system will maintain it for you. you won’t need the tender until you decide to leave it stored up for a couple of weeks.May 30, 2009 at 4:32 am #19066SafetyFirstParticipantI don’t understand why you couldn’t use a higher amperage battery.
It’s no different than plugging a toaster into a 20 amp electrical outlet. Even though you can draw more current before the breaker blows, it doesn’t make the toast.. well.. toast any faster. The voltage is still ~120 VAC, it simply has more current available.
If it fits properly and is the same amperage or more, and is maint. free, you should be fine.
I have a higher capacity battery in my car than stock. It helps my electrical system. Higher amperage battery = easier starts in slightly discharged state. That’s what you’re looking for.
