I’ve been wanting to buy a leather m/c jacket for months now and after a little bit of research, I had narrowed it down to either the Joe Rocket Kawasaki ZX Leather Jacket or the Icon Motorhead Leather Jacket. The main things I was looking for were black in color, vest or full sleeve removable liner, zippered vents, and body armor. And of course, I wanted a good deal too. LOL. Not too much to ask for, right?
My favorite local place to shop is Cycle Gear (http://www.cyclegear.com/) and I had seen the Icon jacket there although they did not have a L or XL for me to try on so I would know the correct size. I fully intended to buy a jacket online only because I never thought I’d get close to the same deal in store. I have and will continue to buy locally but with a big purchase (for me) like that, I figured online would be the way to go.
So Cycle Gear is having a big New Year’s Day sale and I thought I’d drop by today to see what they have in stock and ask a few questions about ordering stuff on New Year’s, etc. I walk back to the jackets and there are signs stating 40% off. The signs are on the AlpineStars and Frank Thomas racks so I ask the young man about the other jackets and he says, yup. I try on an XL Icon in white and ask his opinion. Too big. So Large would be right? Yes. I ask him about ordering one in black and he reaches back behind some other jackets and pulls out a brand spanking new black Icon Motorhead Jacket in large. Holy cow! So instead of $350, it’ll be about $200? Yup. Sold!
I rode with it today/tonight and my initial impression is I love it! For me it was a fantasy deal. Searching online, the best I had found was about $290 delivered for either jacket. And I bought it from the store I frequent! Yea.
Here’s the Cycle Gear link to the jacket… http://www.cyclegear.com/spgm.cfm?L1=5000&L2=2&L3=108&L4=109&item=PAR_1533-3002_G
I have absolutely no affiliation with the store but I would highly recommend them as a great store to deal with. If one is close to you, they will even order things for you and let you check them out without any obligation to buy. And every time I’ve been in there, I’ve been treated right. Check out their New Year’s Day sales stuff and consider getting on their snail mail list. Oh, and fyi, I was told the 40% off was pre-N.Y.D. and N.Y.D. it may “only” be 25% off.

Got my chaps from there (if you don’t know I am a cruiser guy) some saddle bags that are on the now traded Vulcan 500, the cleaner S100 , definitely recommend that too. It doesn’t stop all manual labor during cleanings but makes it a whole lot easier.
Every time I go in there they ask if I need help and if I tell em I am just looking they leave me alone… very key for a good visit. If you have questions about size and fit of something there is always someone there knowledgeable and willing to jump in. Shame they don’t have more for us cruiser types though but oh well…. even some of the Sport bike gear is getting toned down enough to where its universal.January 2, 2009 at 3:21 am #15486ScottyJParticipantI bought a nice pair of Street & Steel chaps today for $50. (http://www.cyclegear.com/spgm.cfm?L1=5000&L2=2&L3=108&L4=110&item=FMI_FMM830-BM-2XS_G) I probably wouldn’t have bought chaps but my girlfriend wanted me to get some. And I gotta admit, they feel pretty comfortable.

So far the only thing I don’t like about the jacket I got is it doesn’t have any front pockets outside of the upper vents pockets. I like the clean look it has but no real outside pockets is a drawback. Oh, and as far as other jackets, I bought my first jacket from CG too, a Motoboss mesh jacket.
