So I went out to a couple of dealerships this weekend to look at bikes, and noticing an annoying trend from the salespeople “Oh, you don’t want that, it’ll be too small..you need something bigger.”

One guy pretty much walked off on me when I didn’t want to look at the stuff he was steering me towards (This was probably also because I told him outright I was just researching today, it would be August before I was ready to buy.) I was interested in the Suzuki S40 Boulevard they had, which really…engine size at least, is plenty big enough.

The other place I asked the lady how big of an engine I needed for a beginner bike, if I wanted to drive on the interstate at all…and she said at least an 800cc, but a 1100 or 1200 would be better.

Gah… just irritating. I realize that I’m a bigger guy, and that they make more money on bigger and more expensive models, but come on people. That’s okay, it just helps me make a list of places that I won’t be buying from in a couple of months.

I ran into exactly the same situation. It is frustrating, but stick to your guns, because you’re right and they’re not. I can’t believe in this litigious society that bike stores are so cavalier about putting new riders on great big bikes.

Sales people aren’t interested in your well-being a quarter as much as you are. Read what others more experienced that you have written, do your own research and make your own decisions. I rode a Suzuki S40 for the last three months, one of those rides being a 120 mile highway ride and the bike performed just fine. I have recently traded up to the s50 but the s40 is a fine, fine bike to start on.
