Hey guys, I got a ninja 500R about a week ago as my first bike. I love the bike and i’m having a great time… The one thing I’m not sure of is how many RPMs I should mantain at a cruising speed… my guess is somewhere in the 3500-4500 range but I’m not sure. So my question is: (I’m apologizing in advance for my ignorance)

How many RPMs should I be at before up-shifting in gears 2-5? can I cruise at 4000+ in gear 4?

and How many RPMs can I push on the highway… in my Max gear my bike goes about 50-55 at 4000+ RPMs… would I be straining the engine if I push 80 or so (regardless of wether i’m ready to handle that speed yet).. I mean the speedometer goes up to 140 so I figure I’ve got to be able to go over 4500 rpms right?

Any insight would be much appreciated.

I’d say most sport bikes are happiest at 6k-8k rpms.

thanks for your response…. to clerify… are you saying bikes are happy with 6k – 8k rpms in mid gears as well? or only in highest gear?

It really depends on the bike. I ride a kawasaki and it might be happiest in the 6-10k range, while a honda would be happy in the 4-8k range.

Doesn’t the owners manual say something about max rpms and when to shift?
