Commute too far?

My husband commutes two hours one way by car each day. We live in the mountains of NC and he drives to Simpsonville SC at least 6days a week. He thinks that getting a motorcycle will help with gas. I agree but I think that is WAY too far to be commuting. We are on the end of “the Dragon’s Tail” and we pass at least 15 crosses on the way home. He is 38 and grew up on a bike, but I just think that is too far. He leaves at 2am-4m sometimes. There is always trees down and he now takes a chainsaw in his car to be able to clear the road. So, my question is, how far it toofar?

That will be another thing he needs to consider. Being that he leaves that early in the morning I would highly suggest a lot of reflective gear. Distance is relative though. I only commute about 36 miles one way … can easily get 100 in a day. There are many a time that I really have to convince myself that I need to go in to work that morning. There have been a lot of times where I just want to keep going. Just make sure he takes a cell phone with him and ask him to take a 5 min stop to call you and let you know he’s doing fine. That way you won’t have to worry so much about him.

He hates them, I do too because we live on curve and I can’t get out of my driveway without almost getting creamed by one on weekends. We also have the cruisers wich are respectable drivers just enjoying the ride. What kind of bike should we consider for 177 mile round trip commute? Reflective gear and full leathers is part of the bargain. He wears plain street clothes to work. So no problem there. If you’ve been on our end of the tail, cell phones get no reception. Not until you get down the mountain. He’s not a drinker so he won’t be stopping at Bob’s Place/Scatterbrains either. Hopefully it will cut down on his smoking too. Any other suggestions besides increasing the life insurance policy?LOL

I avoid the dragon for those reasons that you stated. When I get up that way it’s mostly just gonna be the Parkway. Bikes for the ride…. whatever he is comfortable with of course. We could recommend Sport tourings or cruisers all day long but if he aint comfortable… not going to do you any good. Check out the dealerships and have a sit down on a few. -
