Friday, while riding home from work, I stopped at a red light. I was the very first vehicle at the light and since I knew this was a long light I put the bike in neutral and took off my helmet to scratch an annoying itch in my left ear. After about 20 seconds I hear from behind me the sound of brakes skidding across the road. The guy behind me managed to stop just short of hitting me. He had a cell phone in one ear, food in the other, and apparently did not notice while eating/talking that the light ahead of him was red and that I was stopped at it. SCARY!
September 8, 2008 at 5:15 pm #11825WeaponZeroParticipantWhat would being in first gear have gotten me there? Pulling into a busy intersection and getting hit from the left or the right?
September 8, 2008 at 5:18 pm #11826MunchParticipantWell I imagine the itch went away quick like huh. I also make it a habit to watch the mirrors….if I see someone approaching I flash my brake lights a couple of times. They might not see the bigger red one up in the air but likely to see my flashing one on the ground. That and its cheaper and less annoying then getting the modular(?) brake lights.
Yesterday is a memory, tomorrow is a prediction, but today…… is a Bi**h

September 8, 2008 at 5:51 pm #11830BuddParticipantI wouldn’t make a habit of taking off my helmet. If in first you could have popped it up on one tire spun it and stoppied on the guys hood. Then you could have spun out on the windshield (be careful, it is slick) and popped it back down when the light turned green. : ) Well that is what would have happened in those moving pictures they charge so much for.

September 8, 2008 at 7:54 pm #11841megaspazParticipantThe correct term for that situation is “ass packed”.
WeaponZero, also glad you didn’t get ass packed. There’s a couple of good suggestions above. If you’re not gonna keep the bike in first make sure to keep checking your 6 with your mirrors. Every once in a while pump your front or rear brakes as well. make sure you leave enough room to be able to move to the right or to the left. If you don’t, don’t be afraid to go in the cross walk if there is one.

around, I want it caught and shot now…September 9, 2008 at 12:14 am #11853CBennettParticipantI saw that happen once it knocked the guy off his Harley to the ground guy in the car got out to see if the guy on the bike was ok Harley guy(no idea who he was) proceeded to whoop the **** out of car driving guy(dont know who he was either). I almost wanted to go hold car driving guy for Harley guy but I was laughing too hard…screwed up the guys saddle bags and scratched the bike all up but after the demolition of car driving guy and kicking his front fender once he got back on his bike and drove away. Must have had some serious adrenalin going cause he picked that heavy bike up like it was nothing when leaving .
