I have had my 2005 gs 500 for a while now.the other day when i went to crank it up in cold weather….it would not so i decided to jump start it.It took about ten minutes to crank it n for it to warm up and start. then when going down the highway…it started cutting off almost like there was no gas in the tank…but funny thing there was!The bike never responded when i wrung the accelerator to increase speed!
I was able to bring a friend and we jump started it again. It went a few mile s and then died on me in the middle of the intersection!!!It could not start by it self! And by the way…..it would also come to an intersection and it would feel like it wants to stall!Any idea whats happening to her????January 30, 2008 at 7:32 am #5009BenParticipantHmm… it sounds like a fuel problem to me, and also an idle adjustment problem. I remember when I had my 2002 gs500 I used to play with the idle adjustment all the time, in fact I would crank it up until it warmed up and then I would twist it back down to normal levels (although I’m not sure if thats the best or safest thing to do!).
It sounds like you should take it to a mechanic and see if there is anything wrong with the fuel lines.

Sometimes the vent hole on the tank will get plugged up. If it is plugged it will only let a small amount of fuel out at a time. Much like you let it sit for ten minutes then it works, you ride it, it stalls, you let it sit again and it works.
Also make sure your reserve switch is all the way on.

Any mechanic/Autozone should be able to test it. If you don’t feel like taking it somewhere, charge your battery, start it, let it idle. then once it dies check the voltage across the battery, if your battery is dead, it’s your alternator. If it’s still got life then you’re going to need to take it to a mechanic, and they’ll check your carb’s jets, run some carb cleaner through it, change all the fluids, etc. until they find the problem. unfortunately this could get expensive. Then again, if it was cold during your ride, and you weren’t riding in high enough RPM’s, your engine could just be cooling to much and seizing, Ive seen that all over the small engines i’ve worked with. Remember to be genorouse with the choke on those cold starts, and take your time warming it up. It’ll save you a lot of heartache later, believe me. Good luck
