so my gs500f (bought new with 532mi on it) has broken down. im thinking it has something to do with cooling, but im not sure.
It starts just fine, goes for about 2 minutes, and then the throttle does nothing, rpms start wobbling, then the bike has no choice but to roll to a stop, and stalls (clutch in) the bike then refuses to start. if i give it a few minutes (like 5-10) i get to start the process all over again, runs for 2 min, then dies.
im taking it in for this and the 600mi service tomorrow, but i dont really trust the dealer that much (its the only one in about 120mi so i dont have much of a choice) so id rather go in with some knowledge of whats going on.
anybody? any ideas?? all help is greatly appreciated!

Also just for grins check battery connection… I had a similar problem in abou t the same mileage span… mine was a loos connection for the battery… had good enough connection for start up and a good run until a bump got hit, or vibrations expanded the gap enough to create a high resistance situation to choke out the fuel pump. Probly not the answer but a good start for a bike that new is to walk through owners manual in hand and check all connections and fasteners.
Yesterday is a memory, tomorrow is a prediction, but today…… is a Bi**h

September 29, 2008 at 1:26 am #12917SpoolParticipantSounds like a fuel delivery problem to me. Perhaps your gas tank vent is clogged. Next time it happens open up your gas cap and see if it will start that way.
September 29, 2008 at 1:44 am #12918nau_lax21Participantif that is the case, are problems like this normal… especially with so few miles on the bike??
September 29, 2008 at 2:06 am #12921MunchParticipantMaybe if you managed to pick up bad gas. Mine happened after I got the lo-jack installed…tech thought he retightened the connectors for the battery but missed it. Quick tightening and I haven’t had a problem since.
The way it acted was I could get it started and usually around 2nd gear or some jostling it would start bucking like it was running outta gas… immediate attempts to restart acted like it was choking itself out.. Leave it alone for a couple of mins ( vibrations ceasing) and it would start right back up ..then eventually have the same problem. To save money for you and piece of mind I really suggest checking connections. I am lucky as my dealer is awesome and even came to pick up my bike and drop it back off after the repair. Free of charge!!!!Yesterday is a memory, tomorrow is a prediction, but today…… is a Bi**h
September 29, 2008 at 3:00 am #12927RabParticipantI would strongly suspect a blocked breather too.
Next time it happens, open the gas tank and listen. If you hear a whoosh of air, it means that as the fuel level has dropped (due to consumption by the engine), a vacuum has formed in the tank.
This means that your tank breather is blocked so air from the outside can’t get in to fill the void left by the expended fuel. On my last bike, I had this problem and in fact the bike broke down with these symptoms on my way home from the dealership! I didn’t know what was causing it at the time but on opening the gas tank (to check if I had any gas in there), I found that it let me ride on for a short distance (until the vacuum formed again and it would again “run out of fuel”).
That bike had a breather tube which led from under the gas tank to the evaporation cannister (California model bike) and that tube was kinked. It’s a simple fix if that’s what it is and your dealer should do it for free under warranty.
September 29, 2008 at 7:30 pm #12960MattnGuestDid you check to see if you have the choke pulled?
September 29, 2008 at 7:32 pm #12961MattnGuestReason I ask is it sounds like the choke is on, engine warms up and it floods. Make sure you close the choke once the engine warms.

October 18, 2008 at 4:09 pm #13986adrenalinerushParticipantoh yes this sounds incredibly familiar to me… i bought my 07 gs500f in june but instead of being at 500 miles the problem started immediately. I would get maybe 2 miles and then – NOTHING… stalled out and would only restart with the petcock in “prime” … the dealership had to redo the whole fuel line system and also had a problem with the carbs… seems to be running well now (after 4 shots at the shop and almost demanding a refund)…. this tends to be a known problem with the gs500, and i’ve read other articles on it jsut cant remember where now….. hope the dealer was good to you!!!
