Bad Helmet Day

I have the HJC CL-15 Draco helmet (XS) and I have now been out on 3 rides with it on. Ride 1 was about an hour and was fine. Ride 2 was 2 days later and resulted in some discomfort around my cheek and jaw after. I was more concerned when I noticed the discomfort the following day at work. My 3rd ride was tonight and was for a couple of hours and the ache is still there. I know the padding will break in a bit but I’m thinking that unless that happens fast I have the wrong size helmet.

Anyone else had problems with their first helmet?

Mebbe ear plug related. I noticed for me using either my cx400 earbuds and cheap thin foamies, I’d get aches in my jaw. Found some cheap orange plugs that work fine and have had no cheek discomfort since. Another thing is that you don’t want to stuff ear plugs in your ear. You kind of want to wet them a bit and twist them in. Don’t shove them all the way in though. I bet if you got custom fitting plugs, you’d not get this issue either.

I think the xs has the same shell size as the M but just much thicker cheek pads. You can buy the small cheek pads that are thinner and they should fit in your shell.

So I could but the S size cheek pads in and end up with the same result as returning the helmet for a size S. Interesting. I’m going to skip riding tonight and see how the jaw feels after a ride tomorrow night before I make a decision.

I am pretty sure. Here is the link to the pads. They cost $12. http://www.newenough.com/helmets_eyewear/interior_pads_and_other_parts/hjc/cheek_pads_for_cl_15_helmets.html
