I had a run in with a deer about a week ago.
It came out of a small group of trees sprinting as I passed and I hit it’s back legs. My passenger and I hit hard and went to the hospital but came out with minor injuries. We both more our gear except pants, which would have been better for her as her knee is kinda banged up. I never saw the deer or I would have taken it easy as I approached, but please keep an eye out for critters on the road!

On a side note do those deer whistles work?

Photos of my helmet and jacket. Definitely wouldn’t have a face if not for my helmet.

I had them on a vehicle once, and didn’t see wildlife…that doesn’t prove they work, but they can’t hurt can they?

glad your ok…as far as I go though. Deer are 365 day thing here. as far as the whistles go……depends on the area. Here..no….they are too used to noises and it doesnt phase em. Out in un populated areas…ie swamps kansas flat lands etc. you have a better shot.

Sure. They make the sound they’re advertised to make. Does that scare the deer? Usually not.

Looks like your gear did it’s job. Time to retire it and replace.

    BTW – is that a Shoei XD3?

I usually get grief for asking this, but is the deer OK ?

On the subject of whistles; my mom never hit a deer in decades of driving, ( now 88 and still driving ) I laughed when her friend convinced her to put them on her car 4 years ago and within weeks she hit her first deer. So I’m thinking no, they provide yet another false sense of security against an ever present danger.

When you encounter an animal it reacts to your presence, but if you scare an animal it will flee and often in the worst possible direction. As an example I have seen deer that could easily jump over a page wire fence and yet once they were running in fear of traffic, they run straight into the fence wire with horrendous results. So I’ll take my chances with the deer that is standing still and hope that nothing scares him.

I guess the deer is alive somewhere. I hit it pretty square on it’s back legs, and when I came to, it was no where to be seen. I wish I could have turned him into venison for totaling my bike!

So maybe ex-nay on the whistle.

Yeah they do tend to react negatively, I just wish it wasn’t in the trees so I could have been more alert :-/

Glad you made it through okay. Nice job on the helmet. I don’t think it will buff out. :) Time for new gear. Whoo-hoo!
