I already own and have a 00′ civic paid for, so I’m a bit lucky in that aspect.
I do however plan on purchasing a bike after my MSF course, and riding it as MUCH as possible. I would love to replace my car forever, but I do think having one is a much better backup plan, than only a bike.
I’m thinking of emergencies, incredibly bad weather ect. I live in Virginia and we have weird seasons, it could be sunny then snow the next day in winter, you never know. Also, what if you NEED to get someplace, and its just not possible due to snow/torrential downpour/wind/hurricane, whatever… And someone is hurt or its a family emergency.
Even if its a junky car, I think its better to have one than not. Also +1 for the injury thing. I shattered my wrist a few years back(right, and Im right handed) and I wouldn’t be able to ride a bike, but I could drive just fine.

Date, groceries, friend flying in from out of town, gear for whatever sport you play, rainy days, 110+ heat days, etc… You could technically survive with just a bike, but it won’t be convenient.

just keep it away from mill ave on the weekends so you dont get flattened by someone going home from the bars.

There IS one thing that they didn’t mention. What if you happen to go to a bad neighborhood or a rough part of the city i would feel much safer in a car than on a bike. well i don’t know how it is where you are but i’m from jackson ms and its pretty bad around here. and my safety and my bikes safety is my first concern that is when i get one. I don’t even want to keep it at my apartment. its been broken into once and the way things are around here any thing can happen…so back to the subject. i just got my car fixed and decided to save even for a a bike until it was working properly. I was gonna sell it so i could afford my first bike but changed my mind….so i hope this will help and anyways its always better to have two rides than one…GOOD LUCK!!!
