And how do you know what the road conditions are around the next corner?
We are talking about the street here, not the track. Shit happens on the street and the faster you are going the harder it gets to avoid it.

Depends on the corner now doesn’t it? Which makes it a road condition issue. Some corners are blind, some are not. And don’t mistake the track being any safer than the street either. Shit happens there as well, and there isn’t a track day provider or seasoned track veteren that I know of that doesn’t say everytime they go to the track someone always crashes.

I know this is obvious, despite Megaspaz’s wish to argue about it :), but as it’s a beginner site, I’ll say it anyway.

A catastrophic mechanical failure, or you hitting an oil / grit / sand patch at high speed, some dickhead pulling out of a side street or left turning in front of you, etc. There are any number of reasons where the faster you are going, the less chance you have of getting out of it alive (or at least uninjured).

The biggest factor as to whether you will live or die in an “accident” is how fast you were going before the impact.
