Just wanted some thoughts…
Is this too much bike to consider for a first bike?
I was really interested in a GS500F or even a SV650 but I have found a good deal on a SV1000. Should I pass on this and wait for one of the smaller bikes?

I mean like $4-5,000 down at every dealership I went to(except Harley Davidson). I bet they didn’t have a lot of the smaller bikes there, either? A lot of dealers I’ve been to were clearly trying to make room for their new inventory. After all, it is the end of the year. Don’t know if you went to a dealership or if you are buying from a private seller. But I do know is this web site urges everyone to steer clear of bikes under 600cc. So, you are about 400ccs over ain’t you? If you don’t believe the information on this site…..here’s another

However, I have more than 200,000 street miles under my belt and have taken courses at some of the best riding schools in the country. The SV1K is not a beginner’s motorcycle.
For example: Cracking the throttle open about 1/8 turn and running the engine to 8500 RPM in the first three gears will get you to 100 mph in less than 1/4 mile. The redline is 11,000 RPM. Opening the throttle all the way in first gear will get the front tire off the ground. No bar tug or fork bounce necessary; just open the throttle and kiss the sky. I’m sure that slipping the clutch a bit while launching the bike hard will smoke the rear tire, but I haven’t tried it. I do know that 90 mph is a comfortable cruising speed on a country road. The bike is quite relaxed at the velocity and feels like it has plenty in reserve.
Go for the SV650 or GS500.
