I want to start out and say that this website has helped me immensely. A little over a year and a half ago I was dead set on getting a CBR600. Twenty years old and hard headed i looked around for a good first bike. I had ridden a 600cc Zx6 around the block and grew up riding dirt bikes, and thought I needed a big bike honestly because i wanted to have a ‘cool bike’ the ones that guys park in front of their local hooters and hit on waitresses.
Then I came to this site and read the list of reasons a 600cc bike is NOT a good first bike. I was reluctant to accept it but the logic is undeniable. Later that week i bought a 04 ninja EX250. To nervous i didn’t ride it home. The next day i had my dad take it to his garage so we could look it over. (-side note- my father rides, and has ridden all his life including racing and owning a drag bike all my childhood his current bike being a sick Aprilia Tuono….
he wasn’t happy with my decision to buy a motorcycle and did not go with me to buy it
) My dad found that there were 2 engine bolts missing and the rear brake was suck. How my moms boyfriend didn’t notice this wile riding it back to my apartment i have no clue. I fixed these things and exited got on the bike, my dad and i rode around the neighborhood a wile his Tuono idling at 35 mph wile my 250 is in mid range 2nd gear. I was Nervous and Excited. It was surprising because I am usually pretty over confident, bordering on cocky…. ok cocky. Regardless the next day I laid it down coming out of a stop sign turning left. I don’t really know how it happened but it scratched the faring, kickstand and broke my blinker. After reading this site i knew every one said it would happen but i couldn’t believe that it actually would. I felt horrible and was disappointed in myself for dropping my bike.A year later and now im looking to get a new bike. Don’t get me wrong i Love my bike. I rode it as my sole transportation for a little over a year wile i have been over halling my jeep wrangler. I have put 12000 miles on it, replaced the engine (i found out that the former owner didn’t like to check the oil), had to many close calls to count and one near death miss where a car ran a red light and left me sliding my bike into an intersection. AFTER ALL THIS I CAN SOUNDLY SAY THAT THIS BIKE HAS SAVED MY LIFE. I’m glad i didnt have the power of a 600. whether it was throttling to hard in a corner or limiting my early urge to go super fast. Wile my bike is quick and fun now im ready for something bigger. I am a little wary of getting a full faring 600cc sport bike. I’ve looked at a lot of possibilities and i think im set on the naked SV650. What do yall think? any one heard any thing about these bikes? is it going to be fast enough? any Performance or quality issues?
Thanks alot for all the help and Advice!!!

But the answer to your question is definitely yes, it’s a great bike. These bikes get rave reviews about it’s friendliness, and it’s ability to satisfy speed freaks. And since it’s from Suzuki, I wouldn’t expect any quality issues.
I myself ride a ZX-6R as my first ride, and I’ve handled it quite well so far. Never laid it down (knock on wood). My zixxer gives me more than enough power, but it’s the same concept. You just need to respect the bike. Respect the bike, and it just might respect you back. ; )
I doubt you’ll have any problems with a SV650. But may I recommend that you also look at a Ninja 650r? In my opinion, it looks way better, and it has great performance. It’s the most solid (not suspension-wise) thing I’ve ever ridden. My friend owns one, and it’s awesome. It has a more upright position than a super sport, but it rides like one. Give it a try at a dealer.
Hope that helps some.

As Blasphemy4kidz pointed out, you might also want to try the Ninja650R. The ’09 Ninja 650 has some nice new styling, an upgraded instrument cluster, and promises a smoother ride and the engine tuned for an increase in low-end torque (which is what many folks like about the SV650). If you like a more “naked” look of the Ninja 650, there’s the ER6-N (or, the Suzuki competitor, the new ’09 Gladius). Personally, I went from Ninja 250 to a Versys that, 700 miles into riding it, I’m loving. The Versys is also based on the Ninja 650 engine, but with upgraded sport touring suspension, increased low-end torque, and more standard ergonomics.
