ParticipantHi everyone. I would like to start by introducing myself as a beginner rider and bought my first used bike. Its a 1981 Suzuki GS450 LX and is in great shape. I do have a problem that maybe someone on here can help me with.
So, here is my problem.
I recently have had my bike fixed at a shop because of light problems and they fixed it perfect. I brought home my bike and went for a test ride, maybe about 30 minutes in total. On my way back home I noticed that it was having problems whenever idling and then it died at every red light and stop sign. I got it home and thought it might have been the carbs so I took them apart and gave them a thorough clean. I placed them back on the bike and started it up…..that’s when I noticed them both leaking gas from where it connected to the clamps of the air cleaner.
Any ideas everyone? I have been reading around where I might have to rebuild it but I am hoping it is an easy fix.

Participantvery well cold be that you have the fuel mixture set wayyyyy to rich. find the fuel screw and adjust it to see if that fixes the problem. start simpe then work your way up.

ParticipantLeaking fuel from a carb is usually because a carb float valve is stuck open. I would replace the float valves, a good idea anyways if they are the originals from 1981, and check the float levels. Make sure the floats are not damaged so fuel is inside them. Also check the air filter, to make sure it is not clogged. Sometimes old spark plugs or a bad battery will make the engine seem like it is getting too much fuel, because not all of the fuel is getting burned.
If this does not work, you may have to do more cleaning for the pilot mixture screws and the passages where these screws go- if the pilot mixture circuit is clogged, the carb runs off the choke passages instead and runs way too rich (too much fuel).
I would also try adding Sea Foam to the gas tank- sometimes it will clean up a dirty fuel system the easy way:
