Hi, new here, really love the site especially the reviews (particularly the 250r one), new rider just got my license a couple weeks ago, MSA course due to start coming Thursday.
Was browsing through a Suzuki dealership and caught wind of the owner’s friend selling his used 08 Kawasaki Ninja 250R for $3200. Unfortunately I was informed that it has a small crack in the fairing, the front one if I remember correctly. The dealer said the bike itself runs perfectly fine.
Now, I’ve been browsing around craigslist and a couple other dealerships pretty obsessively for a week now, and it seems that all of the 250’s (with the newer styling 08 forward) all are $3800+.
Should I just go on and buy it? It comes in on Tuesday, and from what I’ve seen even the $3800 listings go pretty quickly. Course, I’ll take a look at it before the purchase, but just wondering if the pricing is good.
Moreover, how much would a full-checkup and/or repair to the fairing cost? I reside in Vancouver, BC.
Really excited and don’t want this opportunity (if it is one), to slip away.

I don’t know how much it would be to replace the fairing, but as long as the crack is not affecting anything I’d leave it for now since you are a new rider and I’m assuming this is going to be your first bike. Wouldn’t want too get the fairing fixed and then drop the bike and crack it again. After you get comfortable on the bike then would be the time to replace it.

$3200 did sound like a really good deal, and I was really excited at first. But I calculated in the taxes and repair for fairings, I think a whole new panel would cost around $300, and it comes out to around $3800, essentially the same.
However, this one IS in black.
I guess I’ll decide when I get a look at the bike, and some more info on the damages and problems.
Really excited for this though, the bike looks absolutely gorgeous for something under 4 grand.
Thanks for all the input so far.

You won’t find one in better conition for near the price.
But look at other places for damage; blinker, shift/brake peddle, mirror edge, exhaust…might have more than just main fairing damage to get it back to mint and could push you over 3,800 fixing it all.August 10, 2009 at 7:50 pm #21461zipperZeeParticipantOne more day ’till the bikes comes in! Tuesday cannot come any slower.
A little bit off-topic, but is $500 for a full set of gear (jacket, helmet, gloves, boots, pants) too cheap (in regards of quality of gear).
The place has a huge sale going, and they’re offering large discounts when you buy full sets of gear (almost 50% off).

Plus quality is a bit subjective when it comes to gear as it does not come with a safety star rating. IMO you are better off getting a full set of decent gear than getting one quality item and skimping on the rest. You can then upgrade individual items as finances allow. Hunt around the internet for deals, motorcycle gear seems to be very seasonal and you can pick up last years stuff cheaply. I also spent a lot of time reading the reviews on webbikeword to get a feel for what I wanted/could afford.
