I Thought I bought an 05 rebel last week…went today ( sunday 10-5-08) to ride it home. Runs like a charm. My husband was following me home in the truck. I stopped to tell him how much fun I was having and tried to shift into neutral…won’t go unless you turn the bike off. I thought since i am a beginner I must be doing something wrong…I went through all the steps, won’t go.
I took it back to the gal I bought it form and she says” Oh it never does, I always hold in the clutch? In my class, with the bike running we had to shift into neutral while running and hold up our left hand until signaled to do the next manuver. I felt there was something wrong with the bike but she says she has had the bike since it had 600 miles on it and she thinks that is just the way the bike is?! Any body know anything about this ? Should the bike be able shift into neutral while running?October 6, 2008 at 1:02 am #13355Sangria7ParticipantYes…should be able to go in neutral running or not.

Practice (at a standstill) and you should get the hang of it. Briefly letting the clutch out just to the very beginning of the friction zone as you’re trying can help you get a feel for what’s going on in the gearbox.

So for now I told the seller to check it out and get back to me. Thanks again everyone. This has been a very informative site for me as a beginner
October 6, 2008 at 9:36 am #13385megaspazParticipantAh… i figured something like coming to a stop while still moving… i have heard that some people like to coast it in neutral while the bike’s still moving. I’ve done it once on a really steep hill road. I didn’t like that little goat trail…
BuddParticipantI heard that revving it a little helps. This seems to be pretty common on the nighthawk.

October 11, 2008 at 2:39 am #13721chromium ghostParticipantI have issues finding neutral when I’m stopped sometimes. It’s weird. Can’t shift up or down. What I have been doing when this happens is letting the clutch out slowly to the friction zone, where it usually makes a clicking sound like when you put it into first, then I can find neutral easily. I think this is something called false neutral?
October 11, 2008 at 3:36 pm #13726DaggerParticipantI have a similar issue with my V-Star except it’s with 1st gear.. If I down shift into 1st while still rolling it’s fine.. But if I forget and try to down shift to 1st after I’m stopped it sometimes has a hard time getting it into 1st..
I did have a lesson on an older Rebel and I know that the clutch would jump between 1st and 2nd real easy.. Which made finding neutral tough some times.. Would have to go back and forth a few times before I could find neutral..

October 13, 2008 at 2:03 pm #13786ilnamParticipantAt times I have the same issue with finding neutral and with getting into 1st on my 07 GS500F. And then yesterday I was upshifting from 2nd to 3rd and it didn’t get into gear property. The RPMs just shot up – I think that’s what they call false neutral.
October 15, 2008 at 1:43 am #13859BuddParticipantTry rocking the bike forward a little bit when you try to shift.
