Chrome Metropolis Messenger Bag Review

I haven't owned a car in over a year, so my motorcycle is my only mode of transportation unless I feel like walking or riding my bicycle. That means I ride to work, to the movies, and to the grocery store. The last location provided me quite a bit of a problem at first, it's kind of hard to fit a 12 pack of coke and bread in a backpack! I looked around for a bunch of different solutions and I eventually decided on a Chrome Messenger bag, specifically the Metropolis size which is a step down from their largest size, the Kremlin.

Sizing

Before I got the bag I actually ran into someone that had one, so I stopped them and asked them what size it was and how they liked it. It turns out it was a Metroplis and they absolutely loved it. They had a Citizen before (1 size smaller than the Metropolis), but they said that after a few weeks they sold it because it just didn't carry enough stuff for them. I filed that little tidbit of info in my noggin and went on my merry way.

A short while later I saw someone else with a chrome messenger bag, and the thing covered their whole back and the majority of their butt! This thing was HUGE! I asked them what it was and it turns out it was the kremlin, yeah, that one is just a tad to big for me :) So in the end I got the metropolis and I have been very happy with the amount of stuff I can carry.

Pockets

One thing that I love about this bag is they don't try and compartmentalize everything and overload you with hundreds of pockets like a lot of backpacks do. My bag has a total of 6 pockets: 2 for pens, 1 for a notebad, 1 that zips up for change and stuff, 1 extra hidden one that I keep a paperback book in, and 1 huge pocket that takes up 95% of the space. I haven't tried it's max capacity, but from the looks of it I could probably store 2-3 gallons of milk (in their container) in that main pocket. All the pockets are closed and protected from the elements by a large flap that velcros down and then buckles down with two plastic clips.

The main pocket also has a removeably waterproof liner which really saved me when I got some chinese food to-go and Orange Chicken leaked all over my bag. I didn't even wash it, I just mopped it up with a paper towel, prayed some windex on it and wiped it off. Viola`, good as new!

Other Features

A trademark of the Chrome family is the car seat buckle on the shoulder strap. This thing is a godsend when you already have your gear on and you can't fit the strap over your helmeted head. Just press the button on the buckle and the straps seperate which lets you put the bag on without removing your helmet. The buckle also comes in handy when your pack is super heavy and you just want to get it off you before you remove your gear. Just slam that button and the bag falls off!! Plus it looks hella cool when you do that ;)

The strap is also really comfortable too, even when I've had the bag loaded down with lots of books. It is nicely padded and because it only goes over one shoulder it seems easier to carry weight compared to a backpack. For comparison, when I carry my violin on my back I sling the strap acrossed my chest much like my messenger bag. The violin strap only has this little piece of rubber to keep the strap from cutting into you, and frankly it sucks. My violin case doesn't weigh much and after 20 minutes of wearing that strapped to my back even with my leather jacket on it felt like someone was digging a knife into my collar bone! I've had my chrome bag loaded down with probably 5x the weight with no discomfort, although sometimes the added weight will make me have to modify my riding to a less aggressive style. The bag also comes with a 'stabilizer strap' on the left side, I tried it at first but I found it uncomfortable and it made the bag hang in a weird way. Maybe next time when I really load up the bag I will try it out to see if it helps 'stablize' things.

Summary

This is a great bag that gets a lot of abuse day in and day out, but it has held up really well. Out of all my moto gear this is probably one of the best things I've purchased so far. They are a little pricey at $130+, but they are definitely worth it!

Pros:

Car buckle strap for quick release
HUGE main pocket can store tons of stuff
Strap is really comfortable
Weatherproof
Looks really stylish

Cons:

Price? In my opinion this bag is worth the $130, they could probably get away with charging $175!!
If you ride a sportbike and you really load down the bag, it makes riding a little uncomfortable, but not that bad

Groceries

How does this bag hold up to holding groceries. That two will be my biggest problem however I don't mind going to walmart every week. I plan to have a tank bag, saddle bag and back pack.

Any advice?

That is mainly what I use it for. Generally it will hold everything that one of those hand baskets they give you at the store will hold, plus even a little more. I remember filling up one of those hand baskets and then grabbing a 1iter soda too and it all fit in the bag :) It was pretty heavy though!

Hidden Pocket?

they're great bags. i've had one for over a year, but i've never figured out which one is the "hidden" pocket. the two vertical pockets on either side? the larger pocket behind the zippered pocket? or something else?

I always thought the one

I always thought the one above the zipper one was the 'hidden' one because I didn't discover it for a full month!

Pocket.

It is on the outside of the bag, near the bottom, really well hidden.

Just got it

Just Got it. First thoughtout the Box was Wow this thing is Big. Then I put the stuff from my old bag in and still had lots of space. I really mean it when I say lots of space. OK so how did it feel. Pretty comfortable. Got the Metro like in the Review Sweet Bag. Fro the price it's worth it because I also only ride a bike fro everything.

Awesome!

Man, can we start a fund to help my new addiction?

A fantastic bag

I've had a Metropolis for three years or so, use it on my motorbike and bicycle, and cannot recommend it highly enough.

Quality: It still looks practically brand new. The hook and loop fasteners still hold well enough that I rarely bother with the clip closures.

Rain protection: I live in Seattle and while I've gotten drenched before, the stuff in the bag never has. Unlike many other bags, this one is designed so that when you close the flap, it's virtually impossible for water to get into the main compartment.

Comfort: No other messenger-type bag I've used stays in position as well as this one, and the heavily padded shoulder strap is fantastic. It doesn't distribute weight as nicely as a backpack, but that's true of all shoulder bags in my experience.

Capacity: As you noted, there's a lot of it. I've had my laptop, a couple books, a camera, a pound of salmon, a bag of vegetables, and two bottles of wine in it - and IT COULD HAVE TAKEN MORE. Nevertheless, if you just have a single book in it, it flattens nicely and doesn't feel bulky - though it probably looks a bit odd.

Visibility: My bag is red with a white stripe, and reflectivity is very good. I feel safer with the bag on than I do in just my motorcycle jacket.

Convenience: As you noted the seat belt buckle release is really useful. It also takes little effort to lengthen the strap to quickly swing the bag to your front if you need access to the contents.

The only negatives I can think of are 1) that it doesn't balance weight across your shoulders like a backpack (Chrome does make one), and 2) if you have a short torso like I do, you may find the corner of the bag touching the seat.

best trunk ever

i use this bag to get back and forth from work. I love it!!! i ride a harley lowrider and it keeps my junk all together as i bb and weeve through the streets.

Chrome Bag and Safety

I'm a new rider and I just bought the Chome Bag, but now as I read more, I'm concerned about carying stuff on my back if I'm involed in an unintentional dismount. How do you deal with the safety issue of carying things on your back.

Chrome Messenger Bag - Citizen

I have the Citizen version of the bag and absolutely love it.

I ride a 2006 Honda CBR 600rr. (sportbike)

The belt buckle is an indispensable feature that I constantly use. In fact, it's the sole reason why I got this as my motorcycle bag.

Hidden Pocket?: I believe only Metropolis and Kremlin bags have this extra hidden pocket. Citizen and smaller don't have this feature.

Anybody watch Throwdown with Bobby Flay? The bike messenger wears a chrome bag every now and then. He also has a very cool metal accessory attached to his shoulder strap. Anyone know what that is and where to get one?

I ride to the grocery store and use the bag to bring home groceries.

Spills clean up easily because of the waterproof lining that they use.

Great review! I am looking

Great review! I am looking into getting one of these messenger bags, but as a new (and inexperienced) rider I was wondering if the bag could shift and throw off my balance when I am riding down the road? Any comments would be helpful, because I have a lot of stuff to carry to school every day. Thanks.

Pretty Useful review. I am

Pretty Useful review. I am also looking for it too. I have only Buell bike for my transportation so i also need one of those messenger bags. As i have been looking it for a long time now but could not figure out which one's perfect for my bike. But after reading this review i have come to a verdict that this is the one i have been looking for. Thanks for the review.
