RobM I also live in San Diego and as of yesterday I have been to every dealer in San Diego As you found out small bikes are nowhere to be found, well almost no where. If you want to sit on a Ninja 250 try Quinsey Powersports in El Cajon they had a pre-release one as of yesterday. Motoworld in El Cajon has a Yamaha YZ6 (no I’m not recommending that bike for a first bike) but it will give you another standard to sit on and it’s seating position and height is very similar to a SV650. Southbay Powersports has a VStar 250 (another cruiser) to sit on and an SV650 sport (dropped handlebars).
I was told that 2009’s will start trickling in over the next month but SV650’s are going to be in short supply for a while.
But your best bet is Craiglist (and you should be buying used). Ninja 250’s show up just about every couple of days. SV650’s show up about twice a week. Ninja 500’s rarely, the 250 cruisers about once a week.
I bought a used Rebel 250 and am doing preliminary research for for my next bike and I think I want to get away from a cruiser. Even though I probably don’t want a cruiser for my second bike this bike has been a wonderful bike to learn on. There’s a world of difference betwen 20 in the parking lot and 45-55 on real streets and doing corners. It’s light, has a forgiving throttle (I’ve found that out a couple of times), it corners great, and it’s been more than adequate to learn on. I’ve been up to Julian three times, on some really twisty back roads and last weekend I went to Idlywild (200ml round trip) including 30 miles of freeway driving. Drop me a line at [email protected] if you want to talk more about what I’ve found out about San Diego dealers, etc. and if you want to do a ride once you have a bike.

IanCParticipantRode for a year in high school, fast forward 30 years and passed MSF course in mid July, 3 days later bought a Honda Rebel 250. Since then I’ve put on about 1000 miles. including 1 80 mile ride, 1 120 mile ride, and 1 210 mile ride. Have riden just about every day practicing the things I needed to work on, counterstearing, putting feet down softly, quick stops, low speed turning.
IanCParticipantThere seems to be a misunderstanding from my post. I wasn’t following closely. I was at least 3 seconds behind. But since the guy was on and off of his brakes for no apparant reason I was watching them and got lulled. The realy problem was that I wasn’t scanning ahead of him so I didn’t realize that the last time he hit his brakes he was going down to zero.
By the time I realized I was closing the distance awfully quickly I was to close.
